Number of students necessary: 3+ 4. Preferred age/maturity: JHS, HS, College, Adult 5. Type of lesson: Group Work Activity * * * * * Language Target: The teacher has 100% flexibility in deciding the language target of this lesson. Commonly, this lesson targets: directions, using money, asking & answering questions, listening, and role playing. It can easily be adjusted for ANY level of English ability. Setting Up: Prepare enough play money, coins, a stop watch or 3-minute egg timer and a copy of the MASTER MAP. Draw a LARGE replica of the Shopping Spree Map on the board (or use an overhead projector). You may want to name the city after yourself or one of the students. Have colored chalk –or markerson hand (as may colors as there are groups). Students are not permitted to see the MASTER map. Getting Started: Divide the class into two groups and give each group time to decide on five things they want to buy choosing one item from each of these categories: food, clothing, accessory, machine and entertainment ticket. Give each group an adequate amount of money (bills and coins) to be able to make all of their purchases. (It might be helpful to review the money.) Also give each group a copy of the worksheet. They write the five items they wish to purchase in the list at the bottom. Keep enough change for yourself since you (the teacher) will be the banker, among many other things in this activity. The goal of each group is to buy all five things on its shopping list. The team that makes the most purchases in the least amount of time wins. Notice that none of the buildings or streets are named. Students have to ask for directions to be able to fill in the names of the streets and buildings. Each team picks a color, i.e., a RED TEAM and a BLUE TEAM. On the board, somewhere on the map, draw a large RED X and a large BLUE X, preferably far apart. These mark the current positions of the RED and BLUE TEAM, respectively. There are three ways to gather information about this city. First: ask any of the pedestrians on the map. (This is done by role playing, the teacher assumes the role of all of the pedestrians). These people can offer information about street names, stores, directions, etc. The second way to role play a phone conversation with an operator (teacher = operator) whereby students ask for assistance or directions. The third is toa Teachers’ Instructions (2/2) For more FUN English Lesson Worksheets Shopping Spree! [Lesson Collection Set #1 – Lesson 16] Visit: http://www.efl4u.com ©EFL4U.com ask store personnel (again the teacher). One team begins, for example the Red Team. Position the Red Marker) on the Red X. Start the three-minute timer. Wait for a student to give directions, for example: Go straight, Turn right, Stop and enter the building, Turn around, Go to the little girl, etc. Respond by drawing a continuous red line that indicates the movement of the Red Team’s instructions. If they don’t say Stop, then keep drawing a straight red line until someone eventually says Stop. When three minutes have passed, draw another large Red X (to indicate the progress so far), and instruct the Red Team to plan their next move. Now it’s the Blue Team’s turn. Write the name of a street or building on the board only after a team asks a pedestrian or a shop worker for this information. Since the clock is ticking, teams have to make the most of their three-minute round by asking pedestrians and store personnel questions such as: Where can I buy (item from list)? In response, the teacher looks at the master map and offers directions such as: Walk three blocks down Willow Street and turn left. The (shop name) is the second building on your right. Teams must explain exactly how to get to the intended stores. The teacher is the ‘tracker,’ and draws the literal trail that each team has given. If a team is in a building asking for directions, they must first exit the building. If they say, Go to Willow Street, the teacher –now the tracker-has to ask, Where is Willow Street? Students then reply, Go out of the door. The teacher says, OK, and draws a line from the building and out onto the street. Then the students say, This is Willow Street. The teacher says, OK, then writes the name of the street on the board. Once a team has arrived in a store, students role play shopping with the salesperson. At the end of each threeminute period, mark the location of the team with an appropriately colored X, and proceed with the other team. Continue alternating between teams, drawing lines wherever they direct the marker. The board will eventually be covered in Red and Blue lines showing the paths that each team has taken. Variation 1: Adjust the pace of the game by being more or less helpful. It's fun to direct higher level students to a store that's closed (if they haven't asked about the hours), students may mistakenly “kill” pedestrians by not saying Stop, send the whole team to the hospital if they crash into too many things, Variation 2: Other obstacles for higher level students may include invisible walls, getting arrested for loitering, getting run over by a bus by standing too long in the middle of the street, sending students to the fifth floor of a building to find the right item (and finding the elevator), draw the location of doors on your Master Map; students can only enter and exit through these, etc. Contributed by Kurt Scheibner
