Preparing to Write the Thesis The first thing to do when preparing to write is to develop your thesis statement. The thesis is your position about the situation, problem, or topic. In addition, the thesis will provide the structure and logic to your paper by including at least three reasons or arguments in support of your position. In the spaces provided below, write different positions that can be argued for this issue, situation, problem, or topic. Below each arguable position, brainstorm and write reasons to support that position. Out of your arguable positions, put a check mark (() in the box next to the position that you would like to present in your composition. Circle the three best reasons you wrote for that position. The positions and reasons not selected are potential counterarguments for you to address in your composition. Write the Issue, Situation, or Problem (Topic): Write one Arguable Position (Thesis): Brainstorm and Write Reasons To Support This Position: (Circle your best three) 1. 3. 2. 4. Now write your thesis statement: your position followed by the three reasons, going from your weakest reason to your strongest reason. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ The arguable position and three supporting reasons are your thesis statement. The thesis statement is included in the first paragraph. Each “reason” will go on to become the topic sentence for its own body paragraph. Since there are three “reasons”, there will be three body paragraphs.
