Sequences and SeriesNotation and Definitions:A sequence is an ordered list of numbers (or elements) that have a definable relationship.The terms of a sequence are usually denoted by using subscripts for the term numbers, for example, the first five terms of the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 would be a1, a2, a3, a4, a5, where the subscripts correspond to the term numbers.A series is the sum of the terms in a sequence and is usually denoted by the sigma symbol: .To indicate which terms to add, an example of the notation is:This signifies the sum of the sequence of ai for i = 1 to 5, in other words add all the terms from a1 to a5. In the example above that would be: 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30.
