Slide 1 : Scientific Notation is a way of rewriting a very large, or very small number using a multiple of 10. 5x103 5,000 = 5x1,000 = 2.3x104 23,000 = 2.3x10,000 = 1.47x105 147,000 = 1.47x100,000 = Where did the exponent come from?

Slide 2 : To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 3 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 1 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 4 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 2 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 5 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 3 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 6 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 4 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 7 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 5 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 8 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2,800,000 6 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 9 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2.8 x 106 2,800,000 6 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves.

Slide 10 : Ex. Rewrite 2,800,000 in scientific notation. 2.8 x 106 2,800,000 To rewrite a number in scientific notation, rewrite the number with one digit in the ones place, a decimal then multiply by a power of 10. Hint: Count the number of places the decimal moves. So = Standard Form Scientific Notation

Slide 11 : Try These

Slide 12 : Try These

Slide 13 : What about this one? 0.0000017 0.0000017 = 1.7 x 10 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6 -6

Slide 14 : So…. A positive exponent makes a whole number and A negative exponent makes a decimal Ex. 5.1 x 103 = 5,100 Ex. 5.1 x 10-3 = 0.0051

Slide 15 : Examples 1. Rewrite 0.00041 in scientific notation. 4.1 x 10-4 2. Rewrite 0.00907 in scientific notation. 9.07 x 10-3 3. Rewrite 0.0000000032 in scientific notation. 3.2 x 10-9

Slide 16 : Try these 1. Rewrite 3.6 x 105 in standard form. 360,000 2. Rewrite 8.07x107 in standard form. 80,700,000 3. Rewrite 7.8x10-4 in standard form. 0.00078
