Gap filling exercise
Learning how to study in an English speaking country can be difficult for non-native speakers for several reasons.1) __ ____ _________the language barrier can be an obvious problem. This can cause anxiety for students2) _______feel they are unable to understand materials given in lectures and tutorials. 3)______, this problem is only the start. Before even confronting the language difficulties, the student may have problems with the new culture in which they find themselves. The phenomenon of “culture shock” is the 4)_______major problem which confronts them.4
This problem has two aspects:5) -------------- learning to cope with the new society in which they live-6)-------- -------------learning how to cope with the learning environment. This can be a double shock-7)----------the students cannot escape the trails of the learning environment and expect to find understanding in their domestic world. This is also because their home life is also very strange for them and (literally!) “foreign” to them. 8) ----------they may not be able to communicate their distress to anyone with whom they are living- and this may make the situation worse. 4
9)___ ________of all this is that the student may feel confused and helpless.
10)__________they might drop out of their course become homesick,11)--------even go home! 12)__________-they may never know if they could have benefited from their experience studying overseas.13) ______ __ _______their time spent studying might turn out to be a waste of their time and money.14) ---------- ----------- ---------- -------, one might argue that any experience overseas (successful or not) is still worthwhile. (6)15)----------- there is 16)-----------more that they have to face. The 17)------------problem I want to mention is one of adapting to the study regime in an English speaking country. This itself involves three things. 18)----------, and 19)--------- ----------learning how to be serious about work. 20) --------- too many overseas students expect knowledge to be given to them without effort on their part.
This is not the way of learning in English speaking countries. Passive learning is not valued.21)________ _________, active learning is encouraged.22)________, the students must be resourceful and find information themselves._23)________they must be able to contribute verbally in the class and not sit in silence.24)____ ____ __________requires the student to be far more responsive and participatory in their learning environment.25)________, they must develop new learning skills appropriate to their host country if they are to succeed.
26)__F______, the student must try to relax. Good learning is not helped by being tense and upset. You must try to respond to the challenges of the new situation and do your best 27)___ _______ _______ studying overseas is a challenge, but also a great experience. Good Luck!
