Configuring Open Office to be used with mySQL
Description:
This document will show you how to install Open Office, mySQL and SQLyog on a Vista or XP computer.
Step 1: Installing mySQL
To install the mySQL database you will want to download it from this website:
http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/white-papers/mysql_wp_embedded.php?gclid=COKl3uWphJ0CFQ0aawod7QlybA
To skip the registration, you can click on “No Thanks, just take me to the download”. You should select the current release which is mySQL 5.1. You should select the download button under the mySQL Community edition. Select the link that corresponds to your operating system which is most likely Windows. I would click the Windows MSI Installer (x86). The file should be mysql-5.1.39-win32.msi. You should select one of the mirrors to download it by selecting either the HTTP or FTP.
When the file is downloaded, select it to run the installer. Follow the instructions by selecting “Typical” from the setup type and press install. You should select Detailed Configuration, and select Developer machine. Select the "transactional database" only radio button. You can select Decision Support and then select Install as a window service. Input a new root password for your mySQL account. Make sure you remember this password.
If you installed it as a service, you can start and stop it by going to your service center. You can get their by selecting your Computer icon on your desktop (if you have it there) with your right mouse button. You should select manage. When it opens up, you should select services and applications. Then you should select services. You should see a list of your computer services. You should find the mySQL service in the list where you can start or stop it. Before you use it, you should make sure you have it turned on. If you aren't going to use it often, you might want to set it to manual so it doesn't start automatically. It defaults to start automatically.
Step 2: Installing SQLyog and connecting to the mySQL database
You can download SQLyog from this website. http://www.webyog.com/en/downloads.php
You need to select the Project Home Page under SQLyog Community Edition under SQLyog MySQL GUI. You should select the downloads tab, and then select the SQLyog815.exe or the SQLyog Community Edition – 8.15 (Beta) which is for Windows.
Select the SQLyog815.exe executable file to install SQLyog on your computer. Just follow the instructions to install it.
Step 3: Installing Open Office
You should visit this website to install open office. http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
You should select the big box that says, “Download OpenOffice.org”. That will lead you directly to the open office file to download. Download the file and select the executable file to install it on your computer.
Step 4: Installing the mySQL Jar file
You need to download the mySQL Jar file to be used for Open Office. You can download it from here: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/5.1.html
You should use winzip or another zipping tool to unzip the file. You can most likely select it and it will open up with your zipping tool. You can press extract to put it in a location that you can get easily.
Step 5: Setting the Class Path in Open Office
Now you should verify that you have the JRE properly installed in your version of Open Office. You should select Tools->Options from the drop down menu. Select Java from the menu on the left, and you should see a list of JREs listed under the Java options.
You now need to set the class path to the jar file that you just downloaded in Step 4. Select class path from the buttons on the right. Select the Add Archive button and select the jar file that you just downloaded. After you have installed the jar file, you should reboot your computer.
