Description
Slide 1 : Indices are also called Exponents or Powers Indices
Slide 2 : Other examples are: 3², 6², 9³ 3² = 3 x 3 three squared 6² = 6 x 6 six squared 9³ = 9 x 9 x 9 nine cubed What are Indices? For example: 6² the number two is the index. The index tells us how many times to use the number 6 in multiplication. As the index here is 2 we will use the number 6 twice. 6² = 6 x 6
Slide 3 : Why use Indices? Indices make things easier to read and write. e.g. 96 is easier to read and write the 9x9x9x9x9x9 ^ SYMBOL On the computer we may write 9^6 instead of 96 as it is easier to type.
Slide 4 : Rules of Indices 64 x 72 NO we can't simplify this we can only calculate it as follows: 64 x 72 = 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 7x 7 64 x 67 YES we can simplify and calculate easily. We can only calculate easily (using the following rules) if the numbers to which the indices are raised are the same.
