Course Description:
This course builds upon spoken discourse and listening strategies introduced in ESOL 030C. It improves fluency and competency through a variety of language tasks such as listening to take notes, listening for specific details, drawing inferences, making class presentations, initiating discussions, sustaining and ending conversations, and reporting past events.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this level/course, learners will:
Develop listening strategies to understand information necessary for everyday life (e.g. weather forecasts, new broadcasts.)
Understand simplified, extended narratives (e.g. lectures, dialogues)
Understand interactions in conversational and lecture contexts
Conversational structures to be covered: (Please see the correct course description.)
Making justifications and giving substantiating evidence
Expressing necessity and making requests: direct and polite
Expressing intentions, expectations
Listening to take notes
Listening for specific details; following the logic of a story
Initiating conversations
Ending/wrapping up conversations
Checking, verifying and indicating understanding
Listening and making predictions
Conversing for pleasure
Intonation: polite and rude

Classroom Procedure:
Students must attend 80% of classes. (See ESL Policy)
Students must actively participate in classroom activities.
Students MUST NOT speak any Spanish in English conversation class.
Students MUST speak Standard English at all times.
Students must be on time for classes.
Students must complete all assignments on time. (1 point will be deducted for each late day).
Students cannot make up a test without proof of illness. If you miss a test, you will get 0% for that particular test. (See student handbook)
Students must put phones on vibrate or turn them off while in the classroom (students may not answer phone calls in the room).

Students will:
Listen to one media program per week (5 to 10 minutes) oral summarize to present to class every Thursdays. (Each student must speak 3-4 minutes long in Standard English in reported speech).
One international news program
Actively participate in all classroom activities (students will prepare and participate in role plays/group activities)
Individual task:
Student will select a topic (an aspect of your country, culture).
Students will research the topic, prepare a presentation
Students will present this topic to the class individually.
