Research Cycle : Research Cycle
Catalog vs. Index : Catalog vs. Index Tells what a library has—books, maps, journals, videos, DVDs, etc.
Includes all formats (print, electronic, visual, sound)
Mirlyn is the catalog of the UM Library (16+ libraries)
Mirlyn gives locations and call numbers, URLs or other “addresses”
Lists journals but NOT journal ARTICLES
Lists articles and tells in which periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) they appeared.
Companies & societies create indexes; libraries buy/lease them
Many indexes from which to choose
U of M Library may OR may not have articles listed in indexes
Indexes are often called “databases” in library jargon
Why Use Indexes? : Why Use Indexes? They filter the literature to bring only articles from authoritative and subject relevant sources to your attention
Indexes specialize in one or more subject disciplines Eg. PsychInfo (psychology), PubMed (biomedical), Web of Science (life sciences, social sciences, arts &humanities)
They allow you to “browse” thousands of journals efficiently
They glimpse the articles *inside* the journals
They have a higher degree of granularity than the catalog, Mirlyn
