3. Why plants drink so much
Description
Plants take up lots of water. This is a need that is accomplished by transpiration. Let us see how do they do it. Do they really drink in gallons ?
Presentation Transcript
3. Stomatal Transpiration : 3. Stomatal Transpiration 80 to 90% of the total transpiration.
Water lost is through stomatal pores
Stomatal pores surrounded by guard cells (on epidermis) are mainly found on the lower surface of leaves of dicots.
Stomata are not found in algae and fungi.
Stomatal transpiration is exhibited by most of the land plants.
Process of transpiration : Process of transpiration Two step process
1. The water evaporates from the cell surface to the intercellular air space and
2. The diffusion of water vapour from these spaces (intercellular) to the atmosphere.
Why does plant wilt ? : Why does plant wilt ? Due to higher transpiration
Xerophytic leaves have resistance to water loss and wilting : Xerophytic leaves have resistance to water loss and wilting Did you know ? Due to sunken stomata and cuticle
