Lesson 1 The Sentence A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. To express a complete thought, a sentence must have two parts. The first part, the subject, names the person, place, thing or idea that the sentence about. The second part, the predicate, tells what the subject is or does. [Subject (names whom or what the sentence is about) My brother’s friend The waffles for breakfast Predicate (tells what the subject is or does) Eats a big breakfast everyday. Smells delicious] From time to time, everyone accidentally includes a group of words without a subject or predicate in writing or conversation. The result is an incomplete thought called a sentence fragment. [Connect to speaking and writing] When you write, your words alone communicate your thought and feeling. Organize your words in complete sentences to make your meaning clear. In speaking, you can also use facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Activity Directions: Match a subject in column A with a predicate in column B. Then combine them to form a sentence that makes sense. Begin each sentence with a capital letter and end each one with a period.
