Say/tell/talk/speak : Say/tell/talk/speak Say: is most frequently used to introduce diret or indirect quotation. For ex. He said that, “---” Tell: is rarely used for direct quotation. It requires an indirect object except in certain idioms. For ex. He told me to finish the work fast. Tell is also used with the following idioms with or without an indirect object. Tell a story tell the truth tell the time tell a secret tell a lie tell all about Talk: generally refers the conversation between two or more people. It is not followed by a direct object. For ex. The students talked until the professor arrived. Speak: speak is followed by to. It is also used in more formal situation . Speak is always used with the names of languages.
