A Dream is not Enough Personal Strategies to Achieve Desired Success By Charles E. Wilson, Ph.D. In 1953, a Harvard graduating class was interviewed as to their dreams for their future success. Only 3% of the class admitted to having a vision, goals, and action plans in place towards attaining their desires. 20 years later these same graduates were again interviewed. It was discovered that the 3% having started off with a clear vision, goals, and action plans had achieved a combined financial success greater than the combined financial healing of the other 97% of their fellow graduating class members. What is the point to this story? It shows the need for developing personal strategies in order to obtain the successes of our desired dreams – no matter if they relate to work, personal, business, family, etc. 95% of us do not have written visions and goals we use as a focus for our future. Most do of use not have a plan of action – a roadmap to successfully achieve our desired goals. Dreams, without goals and plans, soon become simply a wish. We find ourselves wishing we had a college degree, wishing we could become a manager, wishing we could start a business of our own, wishing for Six Sigma training, wishing to quit smoking or lose weight. You get the idea. What are your lost dreams? Why not build a personal strategy towards attainment of those dreams? It is never too late to become successful – to realize your dreams. Make your plans to become successful. Success does not happen by accident. First, know where you are going and then how you will get there. To do this sounds easy enough. Gain a clear vision of your dream, of what you desire to accomplish. Next, develop written goals. Finally, develop action plans for each of your goals to be executed along your journey. Without goals and action plans we are easily distracted and so often blown off course, ending up not where we intended. Focus on your purpose – your dreams – your goals and deliberately execute your action plans. Having your dreams is not enough to obtain the success you desire. Without goals and action plans -- dreams soon fade to wishes. Wishes soon enough simply fade away without the execution of your goals and action plans. We all must continue to grow, learn and plan as we prepare for our desired success.
