Regular verb : Regular verb A regular verb is that which forms its past tense by adding ‘d’ or ‘ed’. Most of the verbs in English form their past tenses by the addition of these. That is why they are known as regular forms. Eg:-jump - jumped; rest – rested etc.
If a verb ends in –y ,’y’ changes to ‘i’ before adding –ed. Eg:- try – tried; bury – buried.
Sometimes the final consonant is doubled before adding –ed. Eg:- drop - dropped
Irregular verbs : Irregular verbs As the term indicates, there are certain verb forms which do not conform to the rule. They form their past tenses by a change in the vowel. Even though they are exceptions, they are quite a lot in English. Eg:- break – broke.
The vowel ‘e’ changes to ‘o’. Not only that, there is a slight change in the spelling also.
Sometimes the final consonant is doubled before adding –ed. Eg:- drop - dropped
Some of the verbs have the same form for both the present and the past. Eg:- put - put
