Slide 3 : TESOL Dr. Ray’s On-Line English Using TESOL techniques to: CONTROL your class And Some activities to Make your ESL lessons EXCITING!

Slide 4 : TESOL Dr. Ray’s On-Line English Students need to be seated in a horse-shoe shape Traditional rows with the teacher at the front does NOT work. If students know they can not “hide” they will participate freely. Teacher has eye-contact with each student at all times. I can see YOU!

Slide 5 : TESOL Dr. Ray’s On-Line English Establish CLASS RULES Students, not the teacher, need to make these rules. Teacher must guide students to the rules that will make the class-room successful. They are: NO Mobile phones Speak ENGLISH ONLY And When teacher’s mouth opens, Student’s mouths close and ears open.

Slide 6 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL Note that the rule is “Speak English only” It is NOT-”Do not speak native language” Do NOT give students any perception that their native tongue is bad or wrong in any way-Therefore be careful to state the rule correctly: ENGLISH ONLY IN HERE Encourage your students to respect their mother Tongue- ENGLISH is their SECOND language.

Slide 7 : TESOL Dr. Ray’s On-Line English It’s important that you be friendly HOWEVER Especially with young learners and teenagers It is very important that you present as STRICT at the beginning. It is very easy to mollify your stance later, but if you allow your students to dominate the class-room from the beginning, you will never get back the CONTROL you hope for, and the students will NOT respect you. Hard as it may seem- long experience dictates that STRICT at first pays off big time later. I am proud to say that my students all love me.

Slide 8 : TESOL Dr. Ray’s On-Line English Do NOT take the instruction to be STRICT to mean that it is OK to hit a student. This type of “strict” will lose you respect very quickly. There are a number of ways to gain control and respect, and I will be happy to go into those procedures in another lesson. Similarly, never tell a student he or she is STUPID, and never use demeaning comments of any type to a student. Our job is to guide and encourage them, not to terrify or belittle them.

Slide 9 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL The greatest trick in controlling and motivating your Classes is: DIVIDE AND CONQUER This is the technique that was used by the Romans, and they controlled the known world for thousands of years. You can control your classes with the same technique. It sounds difficult, but it is very, very easy when you know how.

Slide 10 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL To implement the system, you need to DIVIDE your class into at least TWO teams. Give the teams names, according to the ages of the students- better still, ask the students to suggest team names. Once the students begin to identify with their team, you have succeeded in the first steps of controlling your class. The next step is to add a competitive edge so the teams are COMPETING with each other.

Slide 11 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL From now on, you need to make every activity a competition between the teams. Score points-make it visual-for children, a great method is to draw their team symbol on the board, and add parts to it for good behavior or wins in games. For example, if one team is the “Caterpillars” you can add legs for each point earned. Be Imaginative. Now you can see that students enjoy the competition, and strive to do their best for their team. Non-performance earns a scolding from their team mates.

Slide 12 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL This division of a class works just as well with adults as it does with children. Adults want to learn English, but they want to have fun doing it. If you can allow them a space in which they can do that, without being inhibited, they will learn much faster. Obviously the games you expect adults to engage in whilst learning English will be more sophisticated than those you expect children to use, but adults like to play games too. Give them an environment in which its OK to make mistakes.

Slide 13 : Dr. Ray’s On-Line English TESOL LETS USE A SIMPLE GAME TO GET STUDENTS USED TO THE IDEA OF COMPETING. TWO TEAMS-the “X” team and the “O” Team. TIC-TAC-TOE
