Integrating Reading and Mathematics : Integrating Reading and Mathematics Alexa Contes
“Children's books are being used more frequently to teach mathematics. With literature, children are able to experience the wonder of mathematics in the same way they appreciate the wonders of a great story.”Marilyn Burns : “Children's books are being used more frequently to teach mathematics. Benefits of Integration of Mathematics and Literature : Benefits of Integration of Mathematics and Literature incorporates stories into the teaching and learning of mathematics
introduces math concepts and contexts in a motivating manner
acts as a source for generating problems and building problem solving skills
helps build a conceptual understanding of math skills through illustrations
"Evidence shows that teaching math through children's books motivates children to learn math in exciting new ways; encourages students to think and reason mathematically and builds students' appreciation for math and literature." What to look for when choosing books to supplement a lesson… : What to look for when choosing books to supplement a lesson… An engaging storyline
A sense of wonder about the world
A framework that meets mathematical criteria
Be sure that the book follows the following framework: : Be sure that the book follows the following framework: presents math concepts accurately
visual and verbal appeal
evidence of real-world connections
builds on students prior knowledge
Strategies for Responding to Math-Related Literature : Strategies for Responding to Math-Related Literature Pose questions that encourage children to use higher level thinking
Share books that encourage children to look closely at their world
Invite children to use the pattern of the story to create a new similar story
Select books that explore a mathematical concept and compare the pieces of literature
Slide8 : “As with all math lessons, keep the emphasis on children’s reasoning, ask students to communicate their thinking and solutions, and encourage discussion among students” (Marilyn Burns)
List of Teacher Resources : List of Teacher Resources Math and Literature (Grades K-3)
This book contains 50 children’s books that are useful for teaching math concepts, sample lesson ideas and samples of students’ work.
Teacher Resources Continued : Teacher Resources Continued Exploring Mathematics through Literature: Articles and Lessons for Prekindergarten through grade 8
This collection of articles and lessons illustrates how specific literary titles can support each of the five content standards.
Teacher Resources : Teacher Resources The Wonderful World of Mathematics (second edition, 1998)
This book analyzes 550 childrens book in terms of math content, activities and illustrations.
Teacher Resources : Teacher Resources Choose Books from the MathStart Series. These books are offered to three ability levels, (1, 2, and 3), and cover various mathematical concepts. The next few slides will give a description of the book and examples of mathematical activities that can be implemented with each book.
Slide13 :
Leaping Lizards (MathStart Series) can be used to discuss pairs and patterns, and skip counting by 5’s and 10’s to young students. The Rhyming text is short and simple.
Slide14 : Tangram Magician by Lisa Campbell-Ernst, can be used to support learning geometry and spatial sense as well as recognizing patterns and relationships.
Slide15 : Animals on Board (MathStart Series) can be used to discuss simple addition strategies. This book enables the students to interact with the text when asked how many animals in all. It reinforces the “count on” method.
Slide16 : Elevator Magic (MathStart Series) can be used to reinforce simple subtraction. This book reinforces the use of a simplified number line and allows the students to interact with the text.
Slide17 : The Best Vacation Ever, discusses analyzing results, data and critical thinking. After reading this book, have the students create their own graphs.
Slide18 : Rodeo Time can be used to discuss time, elapsed time and reading a schedule. After reading, have the students then create their own story similar to this. Their stories can then be exchanged with classmates, and solved.
Slide19 : Treasure Map (MathStart Series) demonstrates mapping skills and direction. Have the students create their own “treasure map” after reading this book.
Slide20 : Less Than Zero (MathStart Series) discusses algebraic concepts and negative numbers.
Slide21 : Grizzly Gazette (MathStart Series) introduces fractions and percentage. After reading this selection, have the students reenact the problems within the book.

Newspapers to SupplementMathematics Lessons : Newspapers to Supplement Mathematics Lessons To introduce and supplement a lesson on sequencing, cut out the comic strips and mix the comics up.
Have the students the place the comic strip frames in the correct order based off of the pictures and storyline
What else can we learn from a newspaper? : What else can we learn from a newspaper?
Newspapers to Supplementmathematics lessons continued : Newspapers to Supplement mathematics lessons continued Pass out a newspaper to each pair of students
Ask the students to find the numbers within the newspaper
Ask the students to place the numbers they’ve found in order from greatest to least, add them, have them hunt for fractions and decimals
Newspapers to Supplementmathematics lessons continued : Newspapers to Supplement mathematics lessons continued Cut out the weather forecast for each day and tape it onto a chart. At the end of each week, determine whether there were more sunny or cloudy days, which day was the hottest, etc.
Newspapers to Supplementmathematics lessons continued… : Newspapers to Supplement mathematics lessons continued… Have the students go on a Shopping spree Give each student a budget of $30 to "spend" on items in advertisements. They should try to have less than one dollar remaining.
The Importance? : The Importance? Teaching mathematics and literature together increases a student’s motivation for learning and their level of engagement. (Thaiss, 1986)
When students participate in interdisciplinary experiences they see the value of what they are learning and become actively engaged. (Resnick, 1989)
Conclusion : Conclusion “Many children’s books present interesting problems and illustrate how other children solve them. Through the use of books, students see mathematics in a different context, while they use reading as a form of communication. It has been proven that children learn best when they can apply their learned knowledge from one subject to another.” (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1989)
