A computer network refers to a computer connected by telephone wires or other methods in order to communicate with other computers. So the Internet is many of these computer networks connected together throughout the world. It is common for computer scientists to refer to the Internet as "the net".
What is Internet? : What is Internet? 3 LipNi Services An analogy would be the telephone system throughout the world. If you have a telephone but it is not hooked up to your local telephone company, then you can not call anyone and they can not call you.
Similarly if you have a computer but you do not have your computer hooked up through an Internet Service Provider (ISP - the equivalent of your local telephone company in our example) then your computer can not communicate to other computers and other computers can not communicate with your computer.

In this section we'll explain these terms and how you and your students can utilize the Internet. The Internet provides many services at your fingertips.
The Internet can be used as a library, a post office, a fax machine, and even a conference room. You and your students will be able to send notes and letters to people with similar interests, search for materials and read about topics as varied as that found in any library.
We will go through each of these items with you one at a time.

Web pages are produced and stored independently throughout the world by people with computers linked to the Internet. Web pages can contain information on any subject imaginable. They can have text, pictures, sounds, movies, and even the controls for running applications on your or the Web page's computer.
Most importantly, a Web page can have links to other related Web pages. It is these links that give the Web it name. With all the Web pages in the world linked to each other a diagram of how it fits together looks like a big, messy spider Web.

It's a software program for getting information from the World Wide Web. Netscape is a browser.
It's also a person who gets information from the Web. You are a browser. In fact, you are browsing right now!
If you look up above this Web page you'll see a lot of buttons and text. These are tools to help you use the and move around the World Wide Web. Let's look at Netscape's tools and see what they do. Other browsers will have very similar buttons.
What is Email? : What is Email? 8 LipNi Services Electronic mail, or e-mail as it is more commonly known, is a paperless method of sending letters, notes and messages from you to someone else or even many people at the same time via the Internet. Electronic mail is very fast compared to the post office. Your messages usually only take seconds to arrive at their destination. You can send messages anytime and the message will be available whenever the other person wants to look at it - even in the middle of the night.
Perhaps the biggest advantage to using e-mail is that it is cheap, especially when sending messages to other states or countries.
Today, it costs the same to send e-mail to someone around the corner as it does to a friend in a foreign country.
What is a Search Engine? : What is a Search Engine? 9 LipNi Services If you have been out browsing the Web on your own at all you already know how vast the amount of information is and what trial it can be to find your way to what you need without spending the whole day wandering about.
If so, you must be asking yourself how you're going to use the Internet effectively without a good reference that can change daily as more information is added to the Web. Easy as pie! You have it already and it's called a search engine.

For instance, if you want to find information about Abraha Lincoln you can type in his name, click on a search button, and the search engine will return a list of all Web pages that contain information about Abraham Lincoln - When this was written there were over 1000!
