You helped a beggar the other day. I was born in 1993. I finished my work ten minutes ago. We arrived last night. Rule? We use simple past tense to tell about an event in the past. We use it for one action only. If you want to say two actions then use past perfect tense.

Slide 6 : PAST CONTINUOUS RULE? To show an action started before and finished after a given moment in the past. At four o’clock yesterday afternoon, I was playing chess. What was she doing when you called her? It was raining when we reached the station. Do you notice that there are two verbs in the sentence? The first action gets the was/were + V1 + ing form. example: was raining The second action goes into simple past tense or V2 form. Ex: reached Now the first action is what happened first and the second action is what happened second but that does not mean it will always be in the same order. Ex: My hat fell down while I was walking. Now the first action is at the end or after the first verb. CONFUSSED? Let me explain how this happened.

Past continuous continued : Past continuous continued It was raining before we reached the station. Do you notice there are two verbs here. The 1st action gets was/were + V1 + ING Ex: was raining Second action gets V2 Simple past tense Ex: reached Now the 1st action is what happened first and the second is what happened next. That doesn’t mean that it will always be in the same order Ex: My hat fell down while I was walking. The first action is at the end here.
