1 Discussion Notes Session 1: My Life Has a Purpose Begin by watching the intro video with Kyle Idleman that accompanies session one. (1:18) Connecting to One Another Answer the following questions before watching the DVD. • Have you ever gotten lost while on a road trip? What did you do? How did you feel? • If you were to compare your life to a road, would you say... o Sometimes I feel lost. o It is full of bumps, potholes, and endless construction. o It is smooth but I don’t know where it leads. o I can’t see what lies ahead. o I know where I’m going, and I know how to get there. Changing into the Likeness of Christ In Session One: My Life Has a Purpose we find ourselves guests at the Last Supper between Jesus and his disciples before the crucifixion. Before watching the video, open your Bibles to John 13:1-17 and Luke 22:20-24, and read the passages aloud. These passages set the stage for what your group is about to see. • The Lord’s Supper, or communion as we often call it, took place just prior to Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. What do you notice about Jesus’ actions? • What do you notice about the disciples’ actions? Watch Easter Experience: Session One – Your Life Has a Purpose (24:00) • Kyle used the metaphor of a road to nowhere. Do you think it is hard to find purpose in our world today? Why or why not? • Have you ever doubted you were on the right road? What caused those doubts? Do you still struggle with them? Prayer Idea After taking prayer requests, pray for the relationships and growth of your group. Pray that as a group you would all consider what is most important about the road you each have chosen to travel. the easter experience2 Cultivating a Missional Life-Taking Your Experience Home During the coming week read and memorize John 13:14-15 NIV “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” This week spend some time in front of a full-length mirror “When we take the focus off ourselves and we put it on other people and their needs, we discover the life we really wanted all along.” Kyle Idleman • What do you see? What do you think? Most of us feel worse the longer we look at ourselves. We feel less content the more we compare ourselves with others. Remember, roads that lead to nowhere are hard to build • What road do you find yourself on? • We all have been given gifts, talents, skills and abilities. How, and in what way, might you use your talents to serve others? Sometimes the most difficult people to serve in life are the people who have wounded us . • Identify a difficult person in your life, possibly one who has wounded you, and extend an act of love to them this week. Take ten minutes and write a note of appreciation to another person • You may want to choose a children’s teacher at your church, a neighbor going through a tough time, etc. How do you feel after you focus on others?
