Sun Prairie Software Screening Evaluation : Sun Prairie Software Screening Evaluation We liked this application for a variety of reasons.     1.  It asks for a cost break down, so the teacher and district know how much the software will cost.   2.  It encourages the teacher to seek out different evaluations of the software, to see how established groups have reviewed it.   3.  It encourages teachers to link the use of the software to the existing standards and benchmarks.

Sun Prairie, continued..... : Sun Prairie, continued..... 4.  It also has teachers take many other ideas into consideration, including ease of use, cross-curricular implementation, adaptability, and independence of use by students.   5.  It also encourages teachers to show how they could teach the content without the software, encouraging them to examine if the software is a need, or a want.   6.  Finally, it encourages teachers to investigate what other resources currently exist in the district, to determine whether or not their needs could be met with existing software.

This evaluation tool gives the parents of learning disability kids a place to start. This does not answer all of the questions parents might have, but it does serve as a great way to begin the search process for their child.  The evaluation tool gives the parent ways to measure the intended use of the software to the ease of use. It provides a way to measure the support, feedback and indexing functions of the software.

A few things to keep in mind when researching software for children with a learning disability. Intended use - Is it appropriate to meet the learner's needs ? Content - Does it supplement what the child is learning ? Instructional presentation - Does it meet the appropriate reading level ?  Does it have multiple forms of engagement ?  Does it have multiple representations of content ? Ease of use - Can the child read the information ?  Support - Documentation and support should be provided. Technology adequacy - Can the child use start up and close functions ?

When Buying : When Buying Know the characteristics of the child's ability/disability. Are there options for parents ? ie., Adjustable reading levels. Screen design - Can the text be adjusted ? ie.,double-spaced, color cueing etc... Feedback - Should be consistent. Search function -  Is thorough and accurate. Index - Provides easy access to entire resources including text illistrations and sounds. Content sources are accurately cited.
