Natural Abundance : www.classteacher.com Subscribe Today Natural Abundance An alkene (olefin), is a hydrocarbon containing carbon – carbon double bond. These occur abundantly in nature.
Industrial Preparation and Use of Alkenes : www.classteacher.com Subscribe Today Industrial Preparation and Use of Alkenes Ethylene and Propylene are the two most important industrial chemicals. Millions of tons of both these alkenes are globally produced each year for synthesis of polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycol, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, and a number of other substances.

Naming Alkenes : www.classteacher.com Subscribe Today Naming Alkenes Step 1: Name the parent Hydrocarbon. Find the longest chain containing the double bond, and name the compound accordingly, using the suffix –ene.
Naming Alkenes : www.classteacher.com Subscribe Today Naming Alkenes Step 2: Number the Carbon atoms in the chain.
Begin at the end nearer the double bond or, if the double is equidistant from the two ends, begin at the end nearer the first branch point. This rule ensures that the double bond Carbons receive the lowest possible numbers.

Naming Alkenes : www.classteacher.com Subscribe Today Naming Alkenes Step 3: Write the full name.
Number the substituents according to their positions in the chain, and list them alphabetically. Indicate the position of the double bond by giving the number of the first alkene carbon and placing that number directly before the parent name. For more than one double bonds, indicate the position of each and use suffixes like – diene, - triene, and so on.

According to new naming recommendation by IUPAC, number locants are placed in front of the – ene suffix and rather than before the parent name.

Cycloalkenes are named similar to open chain alkenes, however, a cycloalkene is numbered so that the double bond is between C1 and C2. The first has as low a number as possible.
