In 609 BC Pharaoh Neco of Egypt tries to assist Assyria against the Babylonians. He is defeated and killed at the Battle of Carchemish on the River Euphrates. So Babylon becomes the reigning superpower in the region.
The book of Daniel describes how Daniel, an exiled Jew who remains faithful to God, becomes a valued adviser to successive pagan kings. His bravery and wisdom make him a role model for all persecuted Jews in future generations.
In 597 BC, on the orders of King Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian armies capture Jerusalem. They take King Jehoiachin (Jehoiakim's son) and 3,000 of the leading citizens as prisoners into exile. Among the captives is a young priest who will also become a prophet. His name is Ezekiel.

- Live in obedience. This is more than obeying rules, its about loving God and neighbour, being holy as God is holy, and pursuing wisdom.
- Live as channels of grace. Balance justice and truth with grace… (Beatitudes show the way Matt 5:13-16). Being salt and light.
- Live as people of faith, hope, and love. (The faith of Abraham, the hope found in the prophets, love as found in the law- loving God and neighbour. All related to the covenant. Today our faith is in Christ, the foundation of the new covenant, our hope is through him, and his love is to shine through us.
