Welcome to TutorvistaHi, I am Pavan, your math tutor. I teach for middle grade. The topic we are going to discuss today is percentage.Topics to be studied today. What percent means? Converting percent into a fraction and vice-versa. Converting percent into decimal and vice-versa. We shall also solve some real life problems. Worksheet. Percentages You hear the word percent very often in everyday life.Students fail if they score less than thirty five percent marks. you should always give hundred percent. Samuel has got 70 percent marks in his final exams. There is 80 percent chances of winning the football match. What is percent? The word percent is ‘per hundred’ or ‘out of hundred. Thus, 25% means 25 out of hundred=25/100.Percentage symbol is denoted by ’%’. For example: 40 percent is denoted as 40%. 75 percent is denoted as 75%. Conversion of percentage into a fraction To convert a percentage into a fraction divide the percentage by 100 and remove ‘%’ symbol. Say for example: 55%=55/100 (simplifying the fraction) =11/20 12%=12/100 (simplifying the fraction) =3/25Conversion of fraction into a percentage. Step 1: Multiply the fraction by 100 and Step 2: Put ‘%’symbol to it. Say for example: 9/50 9/50 × 100 =18% 17/20 17/20 × 100 =85% In this way we can convert the fractions into percentage or vice-versa. Isn’t very simple?Conversion of percentage into a decimal Step 1: Divide the percentage by 100 Step 2: Put ‘%’ symbol to it. Say for example: 20%=20/100 =0.2 120%=120/100 =1.2Conversion of decimal into a percentage. Step 1: Multiply the decimal by 100. Step 2: Put ‘%’ symbol to it. Say for example: 0.63=0.63 × 100 =63% 0.35=0.35 × 100 =35% In this way we can convert the decimals into percentage or vice-versa. Isn’t very simple? Now we shall see some of the real life problems. What is 20% of the 50 dollars? Solution: = 20% of 50 = 20/100 × 50 …simplify = 10 hence the answer is 10 dollars. In a basket of 20 apples, there are 5 rotten apples.how much percentage of rotten apples are there? Solution: There are 5 rotten apples out of 20. =5/20 =(5/20 × 100)% ..... simplify =25%On a rainy day,36 out of 48 students came to the class. What percent were absent? Solution: Number of students absent=48-36 =12 so the fraction =12/48 so the percentage=(12/48× 100)% =(1/4 × 100)% =25 % Hence 25% of students were absent.Worksheet Convert the percentage into a fraction. 1) 15% 2) 7½% Convert the fraction into a percentage. 1) 11/15 2) 9/20 Convert the percentage into decimal. 1) 25% 2) 6% Anu scored 384 marks out of 450.What percent marks did she get ?
