Al-Qadoos The Meaning of the word Qadoos The word 'Al-Qadoos' means to be pure. It also refers to something which has blessings and produces or gives much. Angel Gabriel is referred to as being the pure spirit as he brought down the revelation so we can purify ourselves by following it. With regards to Allah, Al-Qadoos refers to the fact that He has no errors, and so all His characteristics and actions are perfect. Nothing else is pure from all sides. So this is proof that all praise and glory belong only to Allah. This in turn proves that Allah isn't like anything or anyone else. For this reason He is the only One Who has the right to be worshipped, as only the one who is pure and whose characteristics and actions are perfect can be considered as a god and so has the right to be worshipped. Al-Qadoos also means that He is in no need of any-one else. He does not need any helper, or any son or daughter. Furthermore, He has all the perfect characteristics and has each characteristic in a totally pure and complete way. There is no-one who is totally generous, totally wise, totally kind as Allah is and there is no-one who arranges life in such a totally wise and fair way as He does. And this is the case for all His characteristics and actions. Also the Name "Al-Qadoos", when it is referred to Allah, means that Allah is the One Who purifies others. He makes us pure so that we do not sin. He makes us pure so that we only worship Him. He makes us pure so that we will not love this world and all its adornments - children, money, position etc – more than Allah, and so will not disobey Allah to please them. He purifies us from being bothered by those who deny Him, and deny the Afterlife and religion. Since Allah is the One Who can purify us, as explained above, we pray to Him using this Name when we prostrate to Him in the Prayer – as our happiness in both worlds depends on us obeying and pleasing Him and not sinning against Him. How this Name should affect us We should accept that Allah is Pure and Perfect and that all His characteristics and actions are also Pure and Perfect. We should only ask Him for our needs and not ask any so-called intercessor. We can only become close to Allah by obeying Him and when we are close to Him, He responds to our needs and answers our prayers. Avoid any innovation in the religion as innovations imply the religion of Allah is not pure and complete, and so He is not pure and complete, and it implies that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not tell us all that Allah told him. Also any innovation that is performed takes the place of a sunnah that should be performed instead of it. We should not say that Allah has any wife or children, as He is Pure and is not in need of such associations or in need of a family for company. We should not think badly about Allah and what He predestines for us. He will make His religion be the uppermost in the end and He will never punish the ones who are close to Him. Also if we give-up anything for Allah, we must accept that He will give us something better instead. It is also wrong to think that Allah did not send us Messengers to guide us and that He will not resurrect us as He created us the first time to judge people at the end of time so that everyone will receive their rights. We should, in reality, think badly of ourselves, not of Allah. The harm that reaches us is due to our sins, if it is really a harm and not a way for Allah to purify us from our sins before we meet Him to be judged. We should make ourselves pure and clean of following our bad desires. We should make our money pure and clean from obtaining it from or using it in any prohibited action. We should make our heart pure and clean it from being neglectful of Allah. We should make our spirit pure and clean it from any feelings of dullness when we worship Allah by renewing our intention before any act of obedience. We should make our inside pure and clean it from any bad feelings or jealousy to others. We should make our time pure and clean it from anything that wastes it as time is our capital in this life; we have to use it to do good to get a reward from Allah. At any particular time, we have to be in the place that Allah likes to see us in. We should not humble ourselves to any but Allah, as He is the Pure One, the One that never dies, all else is not totally pure and will die some day. So, as He is the totally Pure One, don't stop trying to get close to Him all through your life. He is the only One that deserves this.
