Covenant Treasure Institute PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS SERIES Foreword Having studied to show yourselves approved, you have been faithful to learn the foundations of your biblical beliefs, and the many components of putting your life in order to be able to minister effectively. You’ve studied the five-fold ministry gifts and you’ve learned some “nuts and bolts” about conducting ordinances. Now you’re ready to apply what you have learned. Now you’re ready to intern in God’s school of “practical knowledge”. There are many areas of ministry, and you must listen carefully to the Spirit as you prayerfully decide where your own particular calling and office lies. In this series, you will study the various kinds of ministry…personal witnessing, hospital and nursing home ministry, prison ministry, ministry to children and to teens. It is our prayer that you will come away from these studies with a burning passion in your heart, kindled by Holy Spirit Himself, with a sure and certain knowing just who you want to reach and how to go about reaching them. May you be effectively equipped to walk through the doors that He opens for you, and to always be ready to give a reason to any man who asks…for the hope that is within you. In His Love, Patricia T. He states those who have fed the hungry, VISITED THE SICK, been hospitable and charitable to those in need and visited those in prison have done these things unto Him! Conversely, those who did not, did it not unto him. Therefore, one of the primary works of allowing Christ to live in you is visitation to the sick and imprisoned. By the same toke, if we are to identify our visitation as visiting Christ Himself, we should also view ourselves as “Christ” who lives in us doing the visiting! If this were the case, our hospital visits would be somewhat different than what we have been experiencing and what we have been led to expect and believe. When Christ “visited” a sick person, He went intending to do something about it! He is the same TODAY. We should visit the sick, prayed up and ready to be used of God to bring healing to that person. If healing of the body is not instant, that is not your concern…it is God who does the healing, but always make yourself available for His use. Always remember you are to comfort those you are visiting. This doesn’t mean commiserating with them. It doesn’t mean telling them about all your ailments or everyone you have ever known who had the same symptoms they do. It means that you are bringing them the word of God and the person of Christ to speak peace into their hearts and assurance of God’s willingness to heal. It means you offer of yourself and stand ready to perform any tasks or chores left undone because of their illness. Perhaps you can do something for the family at home…cook a meal, clean, make phone calls, whatever is necessary. If you can’t do what is needed yourself, perhaps you can arrange to have it done for them. If you plan to visit hospitals, dress professionally. It is a good idea to request an appointment with the administrator. Visit with him/her about the hospital itself. Ask questions about the hospital’s involvement with the community, about public classes, wellness programs. Ask about the level of technology in the next five years. Believe me, administrators warm to these topics and you will undoubtedly be granted favor in their sight if you appear to be interested in what THEY are doing. This is preferable to spending a lot of time talking about yourself and YOUR ministry. When you feel the time is right, explain that you would like to be a regular visitor in their hospital, assure them you will observe all rules and use discretion in your visiting. Also let them know that you plan to leave your doctrinal and denominational issue at the door, and just as they provide quality care for people’s bodies, you are called to provide quality care for their souls. If God gives you favor, they will give you a card and most hospitals will give you a picture I.D. tag to wear when you are on the grounds. If you plan to go from room to room, always endeavor to be lead of the Spirit. Do not go prayerless, but be “prayed up” and ready to hear from the Lord as to how to handle each situation. If you know the person you are visiting then you know how to approach them. If you do not know the person, be very careful that you do not offend by insinuating they are not Christians or not on a spiritual level with you. When you enter a room you can usually tell by looking at the person if they are too ill to want to talk. If this is the case, just introduce yourself briefly, offer your help, pray with them (if they are agreeable) and leave quickly. NEVER stay in the room where there are visitors and family unless you are invited to do so. You might just stick your head in the door, introduce yourself, leave a card and tell them you are available to help in ay way possible and invite them to call if they need you. Then leave. Remember, just be a friend. Jesus had this reputation; He was the friend of sinners. Begin your conversation by introducing yourself, telling them that you are a Christian and offering to be of assistance to them in any way. Always encourage them to talk about themselves and their families. All you have to do is ask leading questions and most people are always glad to talk about themselves and their lives. See that you have the same reputation as Jesus. Be a friend. Offer to help in any way possible. If a scripture comes to your mind tell them about it. Offer to pray with them before you leave. If they are reticent, say something like, “some people are hesitant to pray with a stranger, so I will put your name on the prayer list at our church” and let it go at that. Visiting a nursing home should be handled much the same way. If you desire to hold services, visit the administrator and explain your plan. Most nursing homes will be glad to assign you a time to come on a regular basis. Be brief if you hold services. Do more singing than anything else. It is not an appropriate time to showcase your preaching abilities, but it is always wise to give the plan of salvation. Most elderly people love singing and appreciate gospel music. Afterwards, try to visit with each one that is rational, praying with those who desire it. Remember, you are ministering as unto Christ Himself. One final note…on an antiseptic note…BE SURE TO WASH YOUR HANDS IF YOU ARE GOING FROM ROOM TO ROOM IN A HOSPITAL OR NURSING HOME. You do not want to spread communicable disease. If you lay hands on a sick person to pray always slip into the bathroom in their room and wash your hands before going to the next room or going home. You may have great faith that will not “catch” the disease, but you must remember not everyone has that faith and if you go from one room to the next, “laying hands”, be sure they are “clean hands”. Covenant Treasure Institute PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS SERIES LESSON 2, PRISON MINISTRY By Gail Watson, Prison Minister “Remember those who are in prison as if you were their fellow prisoner, and those who are ill-treated, since you also are liable to bodily sufferings.” Hebrews 13:3 “Then the King will say to those at His right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you brought Me together with yourselves and welcomed and entertained and lodged Me, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me with help and ministering care, I was in prison and you came to see Me.” “And the King will reply to them, Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least of these My brethren, you did it for Me.” Matthew 25: 34-36; 40 The Call to Prison Ministry In many ways prison ministry is by far one of the most misunderstood and distrusted of all the many forms of ministry. Feared by most and reviled by some for various reasons, prison ministry stands out as one of the most blessed of all ministries. We believers understand the two-fold characteristic of blessings and within the walls of the various prisons across the state, nation, and the world more volunteers are being blessed mightily than the blessings received by the inmates receiving the ministering. God’s covering stands out for those who volunteer their time, compassion, and mercy upon those who have become incarcerated because of some very wrong choices. The Grace of God is a blanket that covers all of us and most especially those of us who make a bad choice and find ourselves in a world in which we never imagined to pass a season. I can without a doubt say that not one of those inmates dreamed of becoming an inmate and never dreamed of being housed behind fences with barbed wire and windows with bars for any length of time in their lives. To enter into prison ministry requires a divine calling to do so and must be the desire of your heart. Most of the ladies and gentlemen you will minister to have ended up behind bars not because they intentionally wanted to, but because they have come under the deception of the enemy and suffer a bondage that naturally leads them to the choices that will result in incarceration. That is not an excuse and in all honesty is the truth of the matter. Most inmates have come from families of sexual abuse, drug addiction and a long list of generational curses. They may or may not have had a foundational spiritual exposure at a young age and certainly never considered asking the Lord to come into their lives and break the pattern of generational curses and change the desires of their hearts. This is where the volunteers in prison ministry become the vessel used by God to call His lost sheep home. It is important to understand that one cannot take on the mantle of prison ministry lightly. The call from God must be strong and the heart must be compassionate to the inmate’s plight. They don’t need sympathy, enabling or financial support. They need consistency, commitment and the love of Christ. These are three things that for the most part they have never experienced in their lives; not from their families, nor from anyone they have come in contact with before the prison ministry volunteer. Different Types of Prison Ministry There are as many prison ministries as there are types of prisons. Some of the most widely known prison ministries include the “Bill Glass Ministry” and “Mike Barber Ministry”. Most widely known televised evangelists have a prison ministry program that goes into prisons across the nation and the world or simply one specific prison. “Joyce Meyer Ministry” concentrates primarily on the Angola Prison in Louisiana. There are city and county jails which house inmates awaiting sentencing and are considered a short-term incarceration. Ministries who go into those jails focus primarily on winning souls to Christ and leading the inmates through a salvation prayer with encouraging words to find a good family church and continue the walk they have started with God. The state and federal levels of incarceration offer many programs and classes for the long haul. The list of available programs indicates very strongly God’s commitment to those who have become incarcerated. “Overcomers”, “Breaking Free”, “Kyros”, “Search for Significance”, and “Faded Blue Jeans” are only a few examples of a program designed to strengthen the spiritual walk and build confidence in who they are in Christ. This is the area of prison ministry that I will concentrate on since this is the area that I have been involved in from the first act of obedience to His call in my life. I have been going into the Hobby Unit in Marlin, Texas for the past two plus years with “Faded Blue Jeans”. Before that I was involved with a similar ministry that worked with inmates in the Travis County Correctional Facility in Del Valle, Texas. These two ministries are related and one is a spin-off of the other. This ministry is loosely based on a twelve-step process for creating release from the bondage of drug addiction. Prior to September of 2003 we came into the prisons under the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. At that time the state government, in its’ infinite wisdom, decided to pull the funding out from under that department and all staff were immediately terminated. Those ministries such as “Faded Blue Jeans” and “Overcomers” were moved under the Chaplaincy department and came under immediate criticism of that department because of their perception of substance abuse. I do not refer to the disbanding by the state government with the phrase “in their infinite wisdom” sarcastically. It was with great thankfulness that we received that decision as it eliminated an element of confusion that came directly from the enemy in an attempt to convince those with drug addictions that their addictions were a disease and there was little they could do about it. Our programs taught them that their drug addictions were wrong choices that could only be overcome by a strong relationship with Christ and God’s divine change in the desires of their hearts. You can see how this contradictory teaching not only caused confusion in the inmates’ minds thereby eliminating the restoration necessary for them to break free from their addictions, but it also caused an animosity between the supporters of these two different areas of approach. There are many ways to become involved with prison ministry other than volunteering to go into the units and minister to the inmates directly. Within the various prison ministries are areas of administration, correspondence with inmates, and financial support. Since most prison ministries are non-profit there is always a need for funding for the various activities held within the prisons. TDCJ State Jails (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) The Texas Department of Criminal Justice operates state prisons, state jails, parole, and provides funding and certain oversight of community supervision (previously known as adult probation). TDCJ is one of the largest state agencies and is currently the largest prison system in the U.S. next to California. TDCJ serves 108 major institutions and over 133,966 offenders at the end of the fiscal year 2001. Recidivism rate for offenders released after three years in 1997 was 30.7%. The average age of an offender is 35 with an average sentence length of 19 years. The average level of education completed is the 10th grade. Many offenders claim some religious preference and many have been in repeated trouble with the law most of their lives. Why are volunteers so important to correctional institutions? Volunteers play a significant role in the criminal justice setting because of their first hand experience and/or devoted interest in their field. Volunteers have the ability to gain the attention and respect from offenders. They are key players in programs designed for rehabilitation and re-entry of offenders into the community. They are a valuable addition to the Agency’s limited resources. Effective September 1, 1981, the 67th Legislature mandated that state agencies would use, whenever feasible, volunteers to assist in the provision of quality human services. How Do I Become a Volunteer in a TDCJ State Jail? The first step to becoming a volunteer within the TDCJ system is to complete an orientation session which will then add you to the Master Volunteer List. Once you have been added to this list you simply contact the chaplain at the particular unit you wish to volunteer in to determine the needs of volunteerism in that unit and the chaplain will add you to the gate pass list. It is recommended that you consider becoming involved in a prison ministry which already has a relationship established with that particular unit to operate under an established trust factor, etc. This step also provides an area of God’s covering and favor that is already in existence. In order to attend one of the volunteer training and orientation sessions within the state jails of Texas you will need to contact the following: Lynann Farris, Administrator Volunteer and Education Section Substance Abuse Treatment Program (936) 437-2878 You will be mailed an application to volunteer and a schedule of upcoming training sessions. You return the application and await a letter that is the key to your attending the session that you sign up for. IN ORDER TO BE ALLOWED ENTRANCE TO THE VOLUNTEER TRAINING AND ORIENTATION SESSION, YOU MUST PRESENT THIS LETTER. For your name to be added to the master volunteer list you must complete the training session and the department volunteer coordinator has to receive the paperwork from the training session you attended and it must be entered into the system. This process may take up to two weeks, but you will receive a notification letter to inform you that your approval process has been completed. For security reasons, you may not visit units until your name is added to the approved volunteer roster available at all units. Considering Volunteering in Prisons and Jails? Jim Smith is the founder and spiritual leader of this prison ministry and would be more than willing to come speak to a group or visit with you individually if you feel that God is calling you into prison ministry. Contact information is listed below for this ministry and has a need for volunteers in several different areas. There is a need for volunteers to go into the various units and minister to inmates in a class room setting as well as the need for volunteers to read and return the correspondence curriculum. Currently the “Steps to Freedom” are reaching about a thousand times as many inmates worldwide as the face-to-face ministry going into the state jails and this correspondence needs to be addressed on a timely basis in order to prevent those inmates from becoming discouraged and losing faith. Jim Smith Faded Blue Jeans Prison Ministry P. O. Box 3158 Austin, TX 78764-3158 (512)442-6002 What Are The Pitfalls of Prison Ministry? Expectations: Going into prison ministry with expectations of so many inmates saved and led to Christ, so many inmates that “get it” so they never return to the system, etc. can lead to discouragement and disappointment. It is important to remember that only God knows their hearts unless He blesses you with a glimpse, and that a volunteer in prison ministry is to offer themselves up as the vessel that God uses to plant the seed and sometimes even water the new growth, but only God reaps the harvest. There will be inmates who go through the “revolving door” and turn back up in your class when you were so convinced they really understood how to stay out of trouble and they had sincerely accepted Christ as their Lord and Master. Receive them back into your class and encourage them in their attempt to recover from a backsliding situation. Always show them the love of Christ and remember what Jesus told Peter when He encouraged him to forgive John seventy times seven. It’s not about you: You are simply the vessel or the microphone or the fingers on the keyboard, it is ALL ABOUT GOD. The moment you forget that bit of inspiration is the moment you will no longer be an effective vessel that God can use to reach a wayward or reluctant heart. In order to be effective it is important to empty yourself of you; all concerns, anxieties, ulterior motives, etc. before entering into His presence to be used in the prison. An impure heart is rarely granted access into His gates of revelation: There will be times when you will find God blocking your entrance into the prison to be used as His vessel. At those times you must be honest with yourself and admit there is some evidence of unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, animosity, covetousness, or some other negative emotion that you have not fully released. These negative emotions will hinder the delivery of the message that God needs to get across to those inmates and He will not allow you to bring that into His presence. Simply pray Psalm 139:23, 24 and go forward in your act of repentance and know that God will use you mightily the next time. Getting In God’s Way: Sometimes you will find that you will be tempted to do something that you feel is beneficial for an inmate such as giving them stamps or putting money on their books or taking a message to a family member or friend for them. I urge you to reconsider unless you have heard directly from God regarding this action and in some cases I urge you to not do them. In prison stamps are money and it is forbidden that you give them stamps; you can give them a self-addressed envelope with a stamp on it in order to correspond with you that you may further minister to them. It is strictly forbidden for a volunteer in the system to give the inmates money. Getting involved in transferring messages back and forth between inmates and their friends and families places you in a position where you might be involved in an escape attempt, smuggling contraband into the prison, etc. Simply put, don’t do it. All of these areas put you in a position of getting in God’s way for God has a better plan to grow us spiritually through the trials and tribulations that we encounter. God probably has a totally different plan for an answer to the requests you receive from an inmate and if you respond with all the goodness of your heart and you haven’t received direction from the Holy Spirit in your actions, I can with confidence tell you that you are getting in God’s way. Getting in God’s way is not something I would recommend you doing. It just doesn’t make good spiritual sense. By the way, God’s answer to their situation will far surpass any help you feel you can give them. The operative term here is “hear from God before you proceed with any action that is a result of a request from an inmate.” Under Spiritual Attack: Once you have received the call from God to be used to minister to those in prison and begin to walk in faith fulfilling that calling and the Will of God you will encounter an increase in the realm of spiritual attack. The enemy will not stop in his effort to get you to give up and not follow through in your commitment to the purpose that God has for you. You will find yourself under attack in the areas of faith testing, provision, physical, and the list goes on. The attacks will come against you from the people that you love and trust the most and will come against the people that you love and trust the most. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone for God has promised not to leave us or forsake us. He has promised that yea though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you are to fear no evil. Two things stand out in this promise; “you walk through”, and the “valley of the shadow of death”. The very fact that you walk through indicates that you come out on the other side victorious. The fact that there is the shadow of death indicates that there is light in the valley and that light is the light of the Lord. In the if-then-else condition of our relationship with God is the promise that if you fear no evil then all of the above conditions come true in your life. Our God is an awesome God and He never calls us to some place that He will not provide for us. And that’s a promise! Take Precautions: Prisons are a breeding ground for germs because of the closed quarters and close proximity of inmates to each other. Once a disease comes into the prison unit it spreads rather quickly and intensely. Make a habit of washing your hands before you enter the unit and then again after you enter the unit. It would be wise to invest in a product which is over-the-counter and in most grocery store pharmacies called “Airborne’ which kills most airborne germs both bacterial and viral. I have included this habit in my preparation to go into the Hobby unit and have found that I am not susceptible to the cold and flu germs that have been spread around the unit and are carried by most inmates into the class. 1. The Greek word for witness means simply “to testify to”, or in other words, to affirm what you have seen and/or heard. Compare this to a witness in a legal sense. Witnesses are called to court to take the stand under oath and testify to what they have seen or heard. They are not permitted to give their opinions or to inject “hearsay” information into their testimony. Jesus said in John 5:31-32: “If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.” If someone testifies, or takes the stand on their own behalf, the distinct possibility exists they are lying to get themselves out of trouble and so the jury must weigh this testimony in that light. But, if another tells the truth and says he/she is an “eyewitness” of what transpired, and testifies only as to what they have seen or heard, then you know that witness is true and the person on trial is judged accordingly. Jesus also said that the works that He did bore witness. This is some of the most powerful testimony there is. It is one thing to say something. It is quite another thing to “DO” it! Note that He says that these works were “given to Him of the Father” and so testify to the Father. John 5:36-37 says, “But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself; which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.” The apostle John begins his writing of 1 John by saying that he has borne witness and SHEW eternal life to you. He also states that he declares only what he has “seen and heard”. This is what we are to declare…what WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD FOR OURSELVES…not what someone else has “seen or heard”. This is how people get into major difficulties in their ministries. When you try to teach or preach something that someone else has tried and proved and experienced in their own life, Jesus teaches that when the word is sown, “immediately Satan cometh” and that “tribulations and persecution arise BECAUSE of the word”. Satan comes to “steal the word” and he does it by making it appear to be untrue in the life, (e.g., Eve in the garden, Jesus on the Mt. of Temptation). If you have not received that word, tried it and proved it in your own life, as soon as you preach it, here comes the enemy with his assault, and you will feel like a moth in the flame, trying to hold on to something you have not “seen or heard” in your own spirit. Stick to what YOU have experienced and soon enough you will have plenty of your own experience to preach out of! 1 John 1:2-4 says, “for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested unto us. That which we have SEEN AND HEARD declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” Also note in vs. 3 that the reason we declare these things is to establish fellowship with others in Christ and the Father and in so doing we will be full of joy! 1 John 5:6-12 says, "If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself; he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life”. Acts 1:8 says, “but ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth”. Yes, it is our job to “witness”, but your witness is required when you are called to the stand by the Holy Spirit. Our witness is not hearsay or opinion or scriptures. Our witness is that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, was resurrected, is seated in heaven and has sent the Holy Spirit to earth. This is our witness. Anyone who is born again should have this testimony! Acts 2:32-33, “This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we are all witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.” Acts 5:30-32, “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Ghost whom God hath given to them that obey him.” It is an awesome thing to witness to Christ by the Holy Spirit. Your words will condemn or justify people in the day of judgment. Heb. 10:27-29, “He that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith eh was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of Grace?” The following is a helpful step by step guide of how to witness to people and win them to the Lord. Step 1: We are reaching out to people who have never worshipped Jesus and know God as only a vengeful, punishment inflicting, wrathful judge. They know nothing of His Unconditional Love, Grace, Mercy and Will and Purpose for their lives. They may have heard the name of Jesus but they haven’t a clue who He is or what He is to them. It is important to show them the unconditional love as represented through Jesus. As Mother Theresa said, “Teach Christ all the time, but only as a last resort use words.” That is the very essence of this ministry. Ultimate Rule: Always, always, always listen to the Holy Spirit!!! Rule #1 - Hurting people hurt other people because it makes them feel less alone in their pain. Rule #2 - They don’t need another judge in their lives, the enemy has them under a stronghold of condemnation and we should not confirm the belief system. Rule #3 - They need a mentor not a parent, some one who can show them how to be a whole person without trying to fill the void in their lives and hearts with things that bring bondage and destruction. Nugget #1: Success isn’t leading someone to Christ. Success is acting out you Christian life, sharing the gospel, and trusting God for the results. Rule #4 - Consistency is key in demonstrating Christ to them, the only consistency they have had in their lives has been inconsistency. They need to know that some one truly believes in them. Rule #5 - Call them what you know God designed them to be people of value. Treat them as if God had already completed the good work that he began in their lives the moment He placed you in front of them. Our goal is all about being used by God to break bondages and sever the stronghold the enemy has had in their lives. Rule #6 - If you are ministering to street people and or prostitues, drug dealer, BE SAFE!!! Though you spirit may want to reach out and hug them, refrain, unless the Holy Spirit gives you the go ahead. A lot of street people are carrying Hepatitis C and/or AIDS. While AIDS requires bodily fluid transmission, Hepatitis C can be transmitted through the air. So, do not put yourself in a position to be exposed. Keep your distance while maintaining a loving attitude towards them. Boost your spiritual life through prayer; cleansing prayer, prayer aimed at rebuking any evil assignments or fiery darts the enemy may have waiting for you. Rule #7 - Be prepared for the attack. You cannot enter into the enemy’s camp without being detected. I don’t care how silent you believe you have been. How do you prepare? Start putting on your armor right now, in this class, because if you have received the calling for this ministry you have also been identified as a target of the enemy. Ephesians 6:11-20. Don’t just say the words, visualize the symbolism and walk in faith that you are covered by the very essence of His Presence. Step 2: Begin casual conversation and lead into the soul searching questions by asking ones like, “ Do you go to church anywhere?” This seems like a silly question considering their present circumstances yet there are those who still cling to a foundation of faith even though they may not be walking it out. Then ask the following questions very gently so as to not appear to be condemning them. “Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?” “To you, Who is Jesus?” “Do you think there is a Heaven and a Hell?” “If you died right now, where would you go?” “If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?” These questions allow you to move into the next area of questions and you must not make the move too quickly. Give the people a chance to think about the questions above and their answers to them. Do not challenge them in their belief system if it is scripturally flawed as that will only confirm to them that you are only there to judge them, but move them into some resistance as they are not sure they want to go where you are leading them. Law #1 - God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. God’s Love: John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God’s plan: John 10:10, “I came that they might have life, and might have it more abundantly (that it might be full and meaningful).” Law #2 - Man is sinful and separated from God. Therefore he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life. Sinful man: Romans 3:23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Separated man: Romans 6:23, “The wages of sin is death (spiritual separation from God.” Law #3 - Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s Love and Plan for your life. He died in our place: Romans 5:8, “God demonstrates His own love towards us; it’s while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He rose from the dead: 1 Corinthians 15:3-6, “Christ dies for our sins…He was buried…He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures…He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred.” He is the only way to God: John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the father but through Me.’” Law # 4 - We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God’s Love and plan for our lives. We must receive Christ: John 1:12, “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even those who believe in His name.” We receive Christ through faith: Ephesians 2:8,9, “By grace you have been saved through fait; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of our works, that no one should boast.” When we receive Christ, we experience a new birth: John 3:3-8, “Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, experience) the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb again and be born?” Jesus answered, “I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, unless a man is born of water and (even) the Spirit, he cannot (ever) enter the kingdom of God. What is born of (from) flesh is flesh (of the physical is physical); and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not (do not be surprised, astonished) at My telling you, You must all be born anew (from above). The wind blows (breathes) where it wills; and though you hear its sound, yet you neither know where it comes from nor where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” We receive Christ through personal invitation: Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him.” Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree with the mind that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for our sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of the will. A self devoted life is one where we place ourselves on the throne, Christ is outside our life, and are interests are directed by self, often resulting in destruction and frustration. A Christ devoted life is one where Christ is in our life and on the throne, self is yielding to Christ, and our interests are directed by Christ, and our interests are directed by Christ, resulting in harmony with God’s plan for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD, “plans for good and not evil and for hope in your final outcome.” You can receive Christ right now by faith through prayer, “Lord Jesus, I need You! Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be! Amen! At this time you ask the person if this prayer expresses the desire of their heart and if so then invite them to say this prayer at that time and tell them Christ will come in to their life as He promised. The Bible promises eternal life to all who receive Christ: 1 John 5:11-13, “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the son has the life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written you who believe in the Name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.” Once the person you are witnessing to has received Christ it is important that they understand what has happened. Christ came into their lives (Revelation 3:20, Colossians 1:27) Their sins were forgiven (Colossians 1:14) They became a child of God (John 1:12) They received eternal life (John 5:24) They began the great adventure for which God created them (John 10:10, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Thessalonians 5:18) It is important for them to understand how important it is to have a good church family to help them maintain their walk with the LORD. Daily prayer and reading the Word of God (give them a Bible) is a very necessary part of the new creature they have become. Our long term goal is to have a safe place for them to be removed to in order to walk out of their new life; re-educate them so they can replace their old life with a new one; and to receive constant encouragement and covering as they move forward to break the strongholds of the enemy and become the disciples Jesus has called them to be. Most of that teaching force is made up of dedicated volunteers. With that kind of commitment from that many people, teachers could change the world…couldn’t they? That’s our goal! There are two institutions ordained by God to teach children. Parents (Deut. 6:7, Ps. 48:12-13) Church (Matt. 28:19-20) Brilliance in the Basics of the Word We are responsible to bring the Word to each child Teach kids to have an experience with God and obey Jesus Teach the faith to children so they live the message of Jesus (James 1:22: “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving our own selves.”) You are there to transform a generation and a nation, to teach the Gospel of Jesus of change the lives of children! 5 Steps in the teaching/learning process Exposure (to preach the gospel and the Word of God) Repetition Understanding Conviction (it is no longer my conviction, but their conviction) Response You are a motivator – helping students connect personally with the lesson Information giver – presenting information the students need to know Coach – allow students to practice working with the facts they just received by discovering how the Bible truths of the lesson work today and why these thrush make sense. Encourager – helping students to apply what they just learned to their lives 7 Laws of the Teacher Teachers are responsible to cause students to learn. Teachers will stand accountable to God for their influence. Teachers are responsible because they control the subject, style and speaking. Teachers should judge their success by the success of their students. Teachers impact more by their character and commitment than their comments. Teachers exist to serve students. Teachers who practice the laws of the teacher can become master teachers. 4 Reason for Sunday School or Children’s Church in Church teaching: The classroom can and should be a place where people meet Jesus. Sunday School or Children’s Church can teach people how to become contributing members of the Christian community. Sunday School/Children’s Church can help students appreciate their Christian heritage. Sunday School/Children’s Church should be a training ground for students to fulfill the Christian mission. If you’re teaching and no one is learning…YOU’RE JUST TALKING!!! Put what you teach in reach of all students, don’t teach over their heads. What we say, can shape their will, or crush their spirits. Proverbs 18:21, “death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Technology has helped change the way children think. We must be geared to the times. Influence that must change the way we teach Loss of childhood innocence Loss of family stability Loss of spiritual roots Loss of imaginary deep thinking “No great nation can ever survive its own temptations and its own follies that does not indoctrinate it’s children in the word of God. Every Sunday School should be a place where this great book is not only opened, is not only studied, it not only revered, but is drunk as if it were the only source of inspiration and guidance.”----------- Woodrow Wilson Sunday School/Children’s Church, is a fantastic place to transform tentative Christians into enthusiastic workers for the Kingdom of God. 5 Ways to Make Lessons More Memorable Stories Arouse interest Inspire sympathy Produce reality Influence conduct You must know it, see it, feel it Object Lessons Visually illustrate Appeal to the senses Can be touched Take abstract to concrete Illustrations What windows and light are in the inside of a dark house, illustrations are to a lesson They allow the student to hear and see the truth Acting/Characters Games/Crafts Why grouping by ages: Birth to 2 year olds Do not participate in group activities Short attention span Need nurturing Need a safe environment Have physical needs that must be met Learn by exploring their environment Limited verbal skills 3 to 6 year olds Concrete thinkers Developing find motor skills Like to listen to stories Need routine Non-readers or beginning readers Need a variety of activities Children remember first and last things 7-10 year olds Want to share their opinions and knowledge Concerned with rules and fairness Enjoy socializing girls with girls, boys with boys Like to be given responsibility Begin to think more abstractly Enjoy active games Able to read and write independently Middle and High School Able to think abstractly Strongly influenced by peers Work in small groups or teams Expect to be treated differently than children Contemplate ideas before sharing Answer open-ended questions Influenced by what is popular or current The fact that you are a teacher makes you an influence in the lives of your students. God can take that influence and use it to change lives. You’ll pick and choose the right things for your students because you know them better as a group than anyone else. You’ll continually change lives by adjusting what you can do to help your students learn better. No look, no “new” idea, no seminar, can replace YOU. You have students who count on you week in and week out to lead them that much closer to the truth of God’s Word. TEST REVIEW Practical Applications Series, Lesson 4, Children & Youth Ministry 1. Now I have 6 children….and NO THEORIES.” Most youth pastors are young themselves and can actually remember being teenagers. I vaguely remember the uncertainty, the invincibility, the craving for acceptance, the zest for all things, but by and large my latest memories of dealing with teenagers is that of raising four of them successfully into adulthood (only by the grace of God). I still have one to go (17) and my experience is about the same as with the other four. So from the viewpoint of one who has “been there”, I am going to attempt to tell you what I know about teenagers, and give you some sage advice, which may or may not work for you. Mostly I can tell you that if yours is the calling to young folk, you should pray much and always follow the voice of the Lord. Period, end of sentence. That is the most valuable advice you will ever receive. God alone knows the hearts and minds of His youth, and I suspect that He trusts them much more than we do. After all, history teaches that David was only around 14 when he was anointed to be King of Israel and between 14-16 when he slew Goliath. Josiah was 8 years old when he began to reign as king of Judah, which probably meant that 5 years later God had a real problem. Mary was around 14 when Gabriel appeared to her requesting her permission to be the mother of God’s son. James and John, (the sons of thunder), it is said, were 15 and 17 respectively when Jesus called them to be his apostles. So never let it be said that God cannot deal with teenagers. He certainly has, and still does. It is just that as His instruments we must listen carefully to hear His voice in the matter. I believe that possibly one of the most important things we must consider is our own character. Teens are very perceptive to any sort of hypocrisy, so it is most important, not so much what we SAY as what we ARE. This is, of course, true when ministering to any person, but even more so with teens. They are quick to observe any discrepancies in our speech and our actions. Teens, (as well as anyone else you deal with) respond well when it appears that you trust them. If they feel you consider them adult enough to deal with adult issues, they will usually respond in an adult fashion. One simply cannot treat them as little children or they will automatically rebel. I recall when my youngest son was in 9th grade. He was new in the school so after a 3 week period I requested a conference with all his teachers to see how he was adjusting, etc. They all had glowing reports. All but one, that is. This older woman should probably have retired several years prior, but unfortunately, was still trying to maintain a modicum of sanity teaching freshmen. She was obviously distraught and let me know that at first she had thought my son was going to be a model student. He had, however, fallen in with the rest of her class, who, by her standard were hooligans on their way to delinquency and life in the penitentiary. She was nearly in tears as she described the horror she was subject to every day! I was appalled. In my mind, I pictured graffiti all over the room and desks, gang symbols written in blood on the floors, knives and guns, drug deals transpiring. What had my son come to? What could he be thinking! “Just what is it, Miss-----, that these children are doing?” (I almost didn’t want to hear the answer). Her voice was shaky and she was on the verge of crying as she replied: “spitballs”. “Spitballs”? I said. “And…….?” (Surely there was more). But no, that was it. Boys were shooting spitballs. Her life had been made a living hell by young boys who had found out what fun she was to torment with a simple thing like spitballs! I of course, promised to deal with my own son concerning her issue, but on the way home I began to think of how I might have dealt with this, had it been my problem. I came to the conclusion that I would probably have offered to make a deal. If they would give me 80 of the 90 minute class time, with total diligence, I would give them 10 every day for a spitball tournament. At the end of the reporting period, the winner would receive an “exempt” status on a test, or a “free day” with a 100 grade, or some such coveted thing. Would it have worked? Only God knows, but it would be worth a try. All the demerits, all the threats, all the sendings to the office, etc. were of no avail. Why not try a compromise. I recall when we were pastoring in Florida. We had a bus ministry and bussed in many children and teens from the local “projects”. These were some rough, tough kids. Some of the older ones were involved in gangs and drugs. Behavior was a real problem. Our very wise Youth Leader (being not so young himself), chose the rowdiest behavior problem there, called him to the front, pronounced him the “Sergeant at Arms” and gave him the responsibility of maintaining order. That simple act not only produced order, but gave that young man a sense of self-worth, acceptance and responsibility. He was quietly amazed that someone trusted him enough to put him “in charge”. Before very long, he was a born again, spirit filled Christian. I am addressing “behavior” issues, because in a group setting, you will need to establish order and respect. Unlike love, respect is an earned commodity. You will earn the respect of young people if you present yourself as an authority figure that is not just trying to be someone “in charge”, but someone who loves them, cares about them and will help them through their difficulties, listen to their problems, befriend them, but also as someone who will not put up with nonsense. When my children were growing up I had as many as four teenagers at a time (two of my own and two stepchildren), two boys and two girls. We had negotiable issues and non negotiable issues. My kids knew that when I said something was negotiable they could bargain….”Yes, you can go, but you will have laundry duty on Monday and Wednesday” (for example). Then the haggling would begin. But my kids knew if I immediately responded with an answer and said “this is not negotiable”, it was no use. They respected that and it worked pretty well. Once you have a teen’s respect, you can then speak with the confidence that they will be receptive to what you have to say. I have found that teenagers are like everyone else. They are born sinners and need to hear the pure simple message of the gospel. When they receive it, it affects them the same as it does a full-fledged adult. They are changed, born-again. The only difference is that they are usually more zealous and hungry for the Word! Youth programs are fine, and I believe they should be chock full of activities….sports (try putting together a softball, volleyball, soccer team, pool tournaments)…trips (try water-parks, theme-parks, rodeos, sporting events, camping trips) ….parties (try theme parties, pizza parties, game parties) All this sort of thing is good, clean fun, provides fellowship and camaraderie with other members of the youth group. But first and foremost, fill the hunger that is inside that teen with lots of word. Present the gospel. You can make it fun. Do a “Millionaire” game, a “Jeopardy” game, with Bible questions, you know, fun stuff. But every now and then, sneak in a personal testimony. Provide a time of instruction in the word. Get them to share things that the Lord has done for them. Don’t hesitate to make an “altar call” at every opportune moment. After you have progressed so far with them, you will know when the time is right, then give them a project to win souls. For those who are not vocal and too shy to sing or preach, why not put them in charge of a project to make money for missions? Teens will soon find out if you are just in love with the title “Youth Pastor” or if you really care about them. Call them when they have been missing the youth meetings. Visit them if they are sick, inquire about their families, their situations. Let them know you care. Send them a note once in a while. As you pray for them, let God speak to you concerning each one, then sit down and write to them, encouraging them. Let them know you are there for them. And one more thing….never break a confidence. Never promise you will not tell a parent if it is something that a parent needs to know. But if you assure them that what they tell you will go no further, then see to it that you keep that promise. One more thing….be certain to keep a close watch on the boy-girl situation. Never allow any opportunity for questionable behavior. I believe that goes without saying, for all the obvious reasons. When given the responsibility of being the youth pastor in a church, always remember that you are accountable to the pastor. Meet with him or her often and remember you are there to fulfill his or her vision for the youth. Discuss regularly how you intend to do this, and take counsel with a ready heart. How do you start a youth group from scratch? There are many interesting stories out there about how God chose to start them. I know a pastor who just went into the streets in one of the worst sections of downtown Tampa, with a couple of tambourines, harmonicas and a guitar. Said he was starting a singing group and wanted to know who wanted to join. Soon he had a group of about 75 teens, teaching them gospel songs, taking them around to area churches. Some were saved and some weren’t. That wasn’t a prerequisite to singing in his group. But need I say that before they hung around too long they gave their lives to the Lord? They were the most on-fire group for Jesus you ever saw! My oldest daughter has a heart for troubled youth. She began by picking up a boy on the side of the road, dressed in black with a T-shirt that gave glory to Satan. She offered him a ride home from school and somewhere between getting into her car and his house, he received Christ into his heart! She invited him to come to bring some friends and come to her home where she could teach them about Jesus. Soon she had a group of over 60 youth. Some were troubled, some not so troubled, and some exceedingly troubled. There was a pregnant 14-yr. old, a boy who claimed to know all the sounds that the various dinosaurs made and periodically for no apparent reason would scream one out loud, several drug addicts, and some in trouble with the law. But just as they were they came. She simply received them, fed them, loved them, ministered to them, and filled them with the Word of God. Some took advantage of her, some came and left, but a few became solid, life-changed, witnessing Christians. Prepare to give up a good portion of your own life when you deal with a youth group. They will call you at all hours, try your patience, take up your time and use your money. But in the end, if you are called to it, you will be content, because the fruit you will bear will be the future of the world! The King chose the armour-bearer. This was a type or shadow of things to come. In the Old Testament, there was vicious warfare, entire communities were slaughtered. We make a mistake when we think that such warfare is discontinued in the New Testament. But it is a different kind of war that we fight. Not one against flesh, but against principalities and powers, spiritual wickedness in high places and rulers of darkness. The armour-bearer played an important role in battle. There is much room in the church today for his ministry: I Tim. 2:2-4 (war a good warfare, be a good soldier) II Tim. 4:7 (fight a good fight) II Cor. 20:4 (weapons of our warfare, not carnal) Matt. 11:12 (The kingdom suffers violence) Eph. 6:11 (Put on the armor of God) Ministers of the five-fold variety are ill-equipped for battle. Therefore, the church cannot go into all that God has without the ministry of the armour-bearer being birthed, confirmed and enlarged. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ARMOUR-BEARER: A. to protect the one to which he was assigned B. to serve and befriend the one to which he was assigned C. to carry the shield into battle D. to be loyally committed unto death To be an armour-bearer was and continues to be an honored position. What is society today missing? Loyalty Commitment Honor Faithfulness Obedience Submission Most of today's leaders had their opinions formed in the 60's resulting in: No concept of authority No concept of submission No concept of covering Strong's Concordance identifies an armour-bearer in the Hebrew as one to "lifts up, breaks up or holds up" Ex. 17:8-13, Amalek is at war with Israel. Moses sends Joshua and Israel to battle (Joshua was Moses servant and armour-bearer) When Moses held his hands up---Israel prevailed, when he got weary and his hands came down---Israel was defeated. THE CONDITION OF THE MAN OR WOMAN OF GOD AFFECTS THE VICTORY OF THE PEOPLE! Aaron and Hur held the hands of Moses up and Israel discomfited Amalek. THE CONDITION OF YOUR LEADER WILL AFFECT YOU SPIRITUALLY WHETHER YOU KNOW IT OR NOT. It's foolish to come against the man or woman of God You hurt yourself in attacking authority God set pastors over us When he/she is down, it affects the entire church body IT IS TO OUR BENEFIT FOR OUR PASTOR TO FIGHT A WINNING BATTLE We must have people like Aaron & Hur. We have pall-bearers instead of armour-bearers! We cannot have disrespect or disloyalty to the man or woman of God. The Hebrew definition of an armour-bearer includes to "guard and respect". FIVE MEN WHO HAD ARMOUR-BEARERS ARE MENTIONED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: 1. Joab (the fact that he had one is mentioned twice, yet it says nothing about him) 2. Ahimelech - Judges 9 3. Saul (had two, though names not mentioned) 4. David 5. Jonathan We could also mention that Moses had Joshua, Elijah had Elisha, and it is said that "Elisha pours water on the hands of Elijah" IN NEW TESTAMENT: Jesus had 12 and then 70 Paul had Timothy and Tychicus (beloved brother, future minister - Cor. 4:7) Where did the armour bearer locate himself in time of war? By the side of his assignment When an arrow struck the King he didn't have to go looking for his armour-bearer. The armour-bearer stayed by his side in the heat of the battle. Some want to be leaders, so they hook up with leaders and are part of the move of God, but when the battle gets hot......you can't find them! It is also of note that the armour-bearer was concerned with the King's honor. Where would churches be today if all the people were as protective and concerned about the man or woman of God as the man or woman of God themselves? Mark 6:5 tells of Jesus experience in his hometown. He could there do no mighty works save that He laid His hands on a few sick folk and healed them. WHY? Because they dishonored Him. In verse 4 He goes on to say that a prophet is not without honor. That's why Satan passionately desires to dishonor men and women of God in the eyes of the people. If you dishonor me you can't receive from me. In our times, the media has been a vehicle to dishonor the church. I Samuel 31, Israel is at war. Saul suffers what does not appear to be a fatal wound. He was the first king. He remembered how they had tortured the judges before him such as Samson. Was his armour-bearer afraid? No. He had been trained for war and handpicked above all most fearless and courageous. Hebrew word "afraid" is the sister word to "fear of the Lord". This is a reverential fear or respect. It is an awesome and beautiful thing. The armour-bearer loved and respected Saul so much he wanted to save him. If fear had been the issue, he could have hid when Saul committed suicide. Instead he killed himself. He was so loyal and void of self-ambition that when the king, to whom he had given his life, was dead, he had nothing to live for!! REASON FOR CHURCH-SPLITS: Armour bearers that have their own agendas and ambitions Failing to get bigger and better things, they take part of the flock and divide the body Saul's armour-bearer had no agenda of his own. He was in covenant with and married to the man of God. If God brings promotion, fine! If not, fine! This ministry is till death do we part. I'm hooked up! This is the only thing that will endure a shaking today. EVERY LEADER SHOULD HAVE AN ARMOUR-BEARER All of us can be armour-bearers and all of us should have armour-bearers. God promoted David from being an armour-bearer to being King! Yet David would not usurp authority over Saul, even when he tried to kill him. David even cried and repented over cutting Saul's garment. We must, like David, respect authority and ministry gifts so much that we will not lift up our sword or our hand against them. We are committed unto death. LOOK AT JONATHAN: Saul is meeting with his captain to get a strategy to stop the enemy. Read vs. 6-7 of 1 Sam. 14. "do all that is in your heart, I am with you, heart and soul." These are the words of Jonathan's armour-bearer to Jonathan. Some are called and anointed to lead. If they follow instead of lead, they will quench the anointing to lead in their life. Conversely, if they are called to follow, and try to lead and not follow, they will quench the anointing to follow...you have an anointing to either lead or follow. Jonathan's armour-bearer (anointed to follow), made this statement to Jonathan. It was not his responsibility to have action in his heart...he was to undergird what was in Jonathan's heart. And Jonathan replied "Come up after me". Vs. 12, the armour-bearer came after him and in Vs. l3, the armour-bearer "slew after him". THE ARMOUR-BEARER IS THE REAR GUARD Eph. 6 18 says "praying always with all supplications in the spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints and for me...not "watch me" rather "for me." WATCH AND PRAY FOR ME...I'M DOING WARFARE...YOU'RE MY REAR GUARD! We haven't watched out for each other, therefore we have been dishonored and blindsided by the enemy. The King doesn't go alone....The President doesn't go alone. 1 Samuel 16:18 - Six characteristics of David that need to be in all our hearts as armour-bearers: 1. Cunning in playing (Developed to a master craftsman skill) 2. A mighty, valiant man (possessing valor, strength of mind and spirit that enables a man or woman to encounter danger with firmness and personal bravery.) 3. A man of war (He understood the who, where, why and how) 4. Prudent in matters (proper or cautious in speech, selective and wise in what to say, possessing common sense) 5. Appearance (Brings honor to the Kingdom) 6. The Lord was with him (had an anointing on his life) WHO SHOULD HAVE AN ARMOUR-BEARER? The Pastor and his/her spouse, teachers, leaders. THREE THINGS ARMOUR-BEARER MUST PROTECT AGAINST THAT COME AGAINST THE MAN OR WOMAN OF GOD: 1. Criticism (Root - Num 12:2) Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses. They were jealous of how God was using him....ENVY and JEALOUSY is manifested through CRITICISM. 2. Murmuring and complaining (Root - an unthankful heart) 3. Accusations (Root - Satan himself Rev. 12:10 calls him Accuser of the Brethren). Devil means "slanderer" (2 Tim 5:19 says don't receive an accusation against an elder ) TEST REVIEW Practical Applications Series, Lesson 6, Ministry of the Armour-Bearer 1. And someday, He will return to earth – not as a baby, but as King. So many people don’t know the message of Jesus Christ, and His followers must prepare the nations of the world for His second coming! This is the beginning of the end. Jesus said “And this Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all nations and them the end shall come.” It isn’t war and rumors of war, pestilence and disease that will usher in God’s Kingdom – it is the preaching of the Gospel. The time to become a world Christian – realizing the urgency to bring the “Good News” to all people and to all nations, is now. To catch the bug for world evangelism you must become passionate for un-reached people. Jesus commanded us to reach the world. Every Christian has a part in The Great Commission. We are left without excuse. Every Christian should know exactly where we stand at this point in time and what it will take to finish the task. We sit in churches, going to Christian services, while so many have never had a chance to hear the Gospel. We must also challenge the youth of our churches like never before to be part of this missions movement. A large part of this church’s mission outreach is to help equip, encourage, and support pastors in needy countries to get the Gospel to every town and village in their area. Jesus will one day reign over all the earth and receive worship from every tribe, people and nation. Jesus ordered us to go to every people and turn. His enemies into worshipers: Matthew 29:19 – Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: God has chosen this time in history for your life to be woven into world missions. What will you do with the opportunity God has given you for this time of world missions? Someone has said the time now comes equipped with a fast forward button. We must do what God is requiring of us now and not put it off to a more convenient season. Jesus is calling us to bear His name, extend His glory and fulfill His great commission. We must get the Gospel to the un-reached people and areas. Jesus said the missions mandate would accelerate in the midst of global disasters. He was talking about the day we are currently living in God is accelerating His Gospel activity and we must affirm; That Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation, the only mediator between God and man (John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5). We deny that anyone is saved in any other way than by Jesus Christ and His Gospel. The Bible offers no hope that sincere worshippers of other religions will be saved without personal faith in Jesus Christ. That is the anchor that holds when everything else shakes off it hinges. The Great Commission has not changed nor has it been rescinded and we must go on with the task of winning our world of Christ. Few would question that we are in a late hour in God’s prophetic timetable. It’s too late to be little. Too near the end to be frivolous. According to figures in the 200 edition of the World Christian Encyclopedia 950,000 people convert to Islam annually from other religions. Christianity sees some 2.7 million new converts each year. In fact, in the last decade the number of born again Christians in the world doubled. But, there is still much left to do. Jesus said the harvest is ripe. But the laborers are few. The harvest will not reap itself. Large numbers of anointed laborers must be equipped to the ripened fields and fast. What an incredible time to identify with Christ and to carry out The Great Commission. God is actively cleaning house, torching all that needs to burn, and He won’t quit until it’s all cleansed. Our goal is REV 7:9-10 – After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindred’s, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hand; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. Our greatest enemy is distraction, materialism and immorality. But, if we stay focused on the lost we will succeed. God did not make a mistake when He chose to place you at this time in history to bear Christ’s name. He knew exactly who He wanted to carry this light to the world!!! He wanted you. The devil would love to stop the whole mission’s effort. We are in a new millennium and most likely the millennium that will see the return of our Lord. The devil knows his time is short and every strategy he has to block the coming of the Lord will be used. Lethargy is the main enemy. American Christians are the most self-absorbed in the world. Whining, I need to know my purpose “Purpose Driven Life”. Attend destiny conferences and try to reach our full potential. Fulfilling out purpose simply means finally figuring out what our gifts are and using them. How can we ever hope to discover our purpose with little or no interest in His purpose? How will we know our destiny when we don’t even know God’s destiny for the nations? Our prayer should be, Lord how do you want my life to fit into your plan for my times? Has God told you to do something? Has this great commission somehow slipped by you? Why are you sitting by it as if you had all the time in the world? The only moment you can claim is this one. We must refocus – off our purpose and onto God’s purpose – off our needs and onto the needs of others. Phil 2:4-11 – Look not every man on his own thing, but every man also on things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. No mission’s class is ever complete without a plan to bring closure to The Great Commission. One of the largest bloc of un-reached humanity is the half-billion plus bloc of Muslim woman. There is little hope of reaching most of them be conventional means. We recently partnered with a group placing corn grinders in Christian churches in Africa. The woman would come to grind their corn for free and would hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and then tale it home to their families. Most of the Muslim women are isolated and hidden within their homes. This group is reaching these women but there is still so much to be done. Men cannot fulfill The Great Commission alone the women have to get involved. I think Jesus saw a vest army of women who would be mobilized in the last days to take this message to the nations. Matt 13:33 – Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. Somewhere in every culture there is a key that will unlock their hearts and the heart of the mission’s is finding that key. Jesus spoke more often of Hell than He did of Heaven. Matt 7:13 – Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. This statement would be considered politically incorrect. Jesus was focusing on rescuing should and not protecting their feelings. Then the well intentioned questioned “What about those who have never heard? Are they saved?” Charles Spurgeon responded “The bigger question is ‘Are we saved if we don’t get the Gospel to them?” Ps 126:5-6 – They that sow in tears shall reap in Joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Those that plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. Saving souls becomes bigger then utility bills and relational problems. Almost every religion has a high regard. But whether or not Jesus is the only redeemer is where Christianity parts company with every other faith. God help us that we shake ourselves loose from the lethargy and embrace world missions with respect and anointing. YOU decide how much and how passionately you will serve God. Oswald J. Smith’s book “The Passion for Souls” he states “Why should anyone hear the Gospel twice until everyone has heard it once.” In America there is a frenzied, all out effort to eradicate the name of Jesus from the public areas. But the name of Jesus is too big to be silenced. His name will be great among the nations. I read where there are two kinds of dreamers, one who dreams by night and wakes up and their dreams are gone and one who dreams by day for they dream with their eyes wide open and then act to make it possible. We must burn to preach this Gospel to all nations and tongues. Again, we hear much about fulfilling our destiny but very little about dying to self. We talk about the joy of the Lord, but travail for souls is foreign to us. Jonah once asked God, “What kind of a God are you?” Unlike the Hindu Gods He is perfect, unlike the Islamic concept of Allah He offers graces, He offers love and not judgment. A love of the world has replaced a love for the world. God put you here on this earth for a purpose. He did not merely save you to keep you from going to Hell. Jesus left His church to do. Part of your redemption package is an assignment to bring the Gospel to the nations. As the seed of Abraham we are blessed to be a blessing to all the families of the earth. It’s going to require every family of God’s people to pray for every person, in every place. It’s time to bring closure to The Great Commission, and that will require a mission’s prayer surge. “The fate of the world is in the hands of the nameless saints.” God said we must petition Him in order to see the promise fulfilled. Ezek 36:36 – Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. Our passion and desire must be that God’s Glory fill the earth. Worship is a threat to the devil because it loosens the hold of this world and prepares the soil for the Kingdom of God. The greatest worship we could ever offer to God is to offer redeemed nations. Rev 5:12 – Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. When we experience God’s Glory then we want to see His Glory extended to all nations. God has given the church a mission’s mandate and when we run from our assignment our sin endangers everyone. The greatest detriment to our evangelizing the world is our own carnality. There are too many Christians that cannot see beyond their own situations to realize there are thousands that have never heard the name of Jesus and we are going to be held responsible. Sin is more open that ever before. Estimates of 1/3 of internet websites are pornographic. Read the paper, watch the news and you feel assaulted. The devil is turning up the heat and we become like the frog in the kettle and accustomed to it all. What can we do? We must keep falling in love with Jesus and stay strong and compassionate year after year. The challenges that face the 21st century Christians are those we have never faced before but the road map has never changes. God’s Word steadies us even when the earth shifts beneath us. We must proclaim, Rom 9:33 – As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosever believeth on him shall not be ashamed to the world. Hope is never out of style and too many of the nations have none. They have never heard of the coming of the Lord. We must tell them. He term worldly Christian has been used in the church for many years and it’s time to change the term and become “World Christians” and this Gospel must be preached in the entire world and then the end comes. We are to proclaim Christ where we live, beyond our city and bless all the families of the earth. People in the United States are among the unsaved but probably not part of the un-reached. There are still many places on this globe where people live their entire lives without hearing the Gospel. Our only hope of seeing The Great Commission fulfilled in our lifetime is for all world Christians to link arms to reap a harvest. Jesus ministry to the Samaritan woman at the well showed the need to reach across ethnic lines to minister others outside our culture. Jesus was forcing the disciples to think in a bigger world. Jesus prayed in John 17:21 that they all may be as one and that the world may believe that you sent me. More than ever there is a strong push to declare that Christianity is just one of many ways to God. The church of Jesus Christ is the only hindrance to that heresy even here in America. You must ask yourself the question, what role has God called me to fulfill in The Great Commission? It only comes by Holy Spirit revelation. We must become a house of prayer for all nations. One of the most important steps any individual can take is to prayerfully take ownership of a group of people who are currently without the Gospel. Our prayers cannot be short sighted that we only pray for our own but, we must ask God for the world. In the last decade the Lord handed the church a great miracle as doors swung open to entire nations that had been shut to the Gospel. How many of these doors will remain open we don’t know so we must act now to train local pastors who shepherd their own people. God is calling the church today, in the 21st Century to step out of mediocrity and into the fullness of its calling The Great Commission might be fulfilled and the glorious return of Christ be realized. There is an estimated 1.2 to 1.4 Billion people that have never heard the Gospel. It’s where 85% of the world’s poorest and most deprived people live. They are 95% Muslim, Hindus and Buddhists. From the 2000 Joshua project there are still 249 large groups that remain unclaimed. The Great Commission is not an option to be considered, but a mandate to be obeyed. Satan knows his time is short and Special Forces have been assigned to stop all missions work yet there is a hunger and a passion stirring in the hearts of God’s people like never before to bring this thing to a close. Jesus wasn’t crucified because He was weak, but because He was strong. The church isn’t being attacked because it is weak but because it is a threat to Satan’s territory. Not every Christian is called to be a missionary, but every Christian is called to missions. There is a role God wants you to fulfill in this late hour of history. Only you can find where you fit in mission’s. You can be a do-er, a pray-er, a giver or an encourager. Don’t wait for God to overwhelm you; you are already under His commission. Make sure what you do is of eternal value.
