Slide 2 : Planning a meal can feel overwhelming many factors go into it we find ourselves stressed and not enjoying the process. Here is what we will cover Importance of planning Know your budget Putting a menu together Standardized recipes Adjust yields Shopping tips

Importance of planning : meal planning will help you by: Have effective shopping trips. You can produce cooked meals effectively. You can get an idea of how much you will spend.(Budget control) Saves you time! You can be creative with the meals. Makes meal planning so much enjoyable. Importance of planning

Know your budget : The key to a successful menu plan is to know your budget. Once you know your budget you can plan what you can afford for that day, week or even month. Make a plan look at your overall expenses for that month compared to your income. Other Expenses Include all expenses that are neither food, or beverage. Once you know food shopping minus the other expenses you can then plan your shopping trip! Know your budget EXAMPLE: Total Income of week =1500 Other expenses= 400 Money leftover= 1100 left over From there you can figure out your cost of food

Putting the menu together : Using the skills mentioned before will kick start your menu planning. Have a standardized recipe: The standardized recipe controls both the quantity and quality of what the kitchen will produce. It details the procedures to be used in preparing and serving each of your menu items. This would be a great way to even start your own family cook book. Each time you cook your family fav’s you can record the recipe down and use this each time you cook that dish. Putting the menu together

How to Adjust recipe Yield : How to Adjust recipe Yield Biryani Rice Yield=5 1 cup basmati rice. ½ cup peas/carrots. 2 potatoes. 1 onion diced. 1 tablespoon biryani spices. 2 cloves garlic 2 cups broth 1 teaspoon salt Yield Desired Current Yield = Conversion Factor Example: This biryani recipe Yields 5 We want to make 14 servings for a party. 14 = 2.8 5 So you multiply each ingredient by 2.8 or you can round it up to 3

Your almost there! : Once you can have a standard recipe Know how many people you are serving How to expand your recipe to fit the desired yield. You can now plan your shopping trip! Your almost there!

SHOPPING TIPS! : SHOPPING TIPS!

TIP#1 : Make a list of needed Items. (some great foods to stock up on are non perishables such as rice, tomato sauce, pasta, noodles, canned or frozen vegetables, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and yeast. These items can last you some time and save you from having to buy them each time you go shipping. TIP#1

TIP #2 : Spices don’t have to be expensive!! Shop your local dollar or discount stores you would be shocked at the variety of spices you can find. Store any bulk or rarely used spices in a glass container in the freezer to give them a longer shelf life. TIP #2

Tip#2 : Buy in bulk,  Whether it’s choosing a “family size” pack of skinless chicken breasts ,steak, ground beef seafood, and freezing what you don’t use right away or one large container of nonfat yogurt instead of individual servings, buying big can equal big savings. Tip#2

Tip#3 : Cut those coupons, Coupons are everywhere these days, from local flyers to the Internet. Check individual food companies’ Web sites for discounts, rebates, and coupons you can print yourself. Tip#3

Tip#4 : Try some substitutions. Beans are another good source of protein and are usually much cheaper than meat. Fish can be bought frozen or canned to cut down on cost as well. Many Store brands taste just as great as the Brand name items this can save you up to 50% on the item. Tip#4

Tip#5 : keep the exact amount of money with you when you go shopping this will prevent you from straying from you budget. Knowing that your on budget while shopping can be simple. You may use a calculator, and some stores provide hand help price scanners. Tip#5

SHOPPING! : SHOPPING! Shopping List 1 carton eggs 5 lb pot roast beef 2lbs onions 2lb tomatoes 1kb angel hair pasta 3lbs chicken breast 1 bag breadcrumbs 1gallon milk 2loafs bread 1 bunch bananas 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables Take this shopping list as an example, try to think creatively how many dishes can be made from this one list?. Keep in mind items you already may have stocked at home.

Be creative! : Examples: eggs, milk,bread some cinnamon, some sugar can make French toast. Onions tomatoes can make a lovely salad with a bit cumin salt . Paired on the side with some braised beef. Breaded Chicken with a side of Angel hair pasta, and fresh Tomato Sauce….. And much more Be creative!

Slide 18 : Think of the variety of dishes you can make out of any given item or items. Even the most simple of ingredients can be transformed into something new and exciting. With creativity and some time you will begin to notice this habit develop if you go to the supermarket each time with that in mind it will become second nature to you.
