Wiki it Speak English Lesson 2 : Wiki it Speak English Lesson 2 Maggi Carstairs http://activeenglishspeaking.com

Introduce Yourself : Introduce Yourself Write your name and location on the chatline or here on the Power Point.

Do you have a wiki? : Do you have a wiki? If you know what a wiki is, please write the meaning here…

Definition of a Wiki : Definition of a Wiki Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create, and edit, Web page content, using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks, and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and cross links between internal pages on the fly.

Wikis are editable : Wikis are editable Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms, in that it allows the organization of contributions, to be edited, in addition to the content itself. You can change a wiki to suit yourself, and what you think is the best presentation. …"open editing"

Open Editing : Open Editing Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage . Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web, and promotes content composition by non-technical users. ie anybody can edit a wiki

Wikipedia Definition of a Wiki : Wikipedia Definition of a Wiki A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language

Collaborative Websites : Collaborative Websites Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. Great for students and Schools…educational wikis http://www.pbwiki.com

Knowledge Management for Business : Knowledge Management for Business Wikis are used in business to provide intranet and Knowledge Management systems Courses and Curriculum for Education and Schools. Data sources...Libraries, Resource Centres, Catalogues,

WYSIWYG Editing : WYSIWYG Editing wikis are making "WYSIWYG" ("What You See Is What You Get") editing available to users, usually by means of JavaScript or an ActiveX control that translates graphically entered formatting instructions, such as "bold" and "italics", into the corresponding HTML tags or wikitext. In those implementations, the markup of a newly edited, marked-up version of the page is generated and submitted to the server transparently, and the user is shielded from this technical detail . ie its easy to write a wiki as you don’t need technical skills. You just write and it all happens

Edit Summary : Edit Summary This is a short piece of text (usually one line) summarizing the changes. It is not inserted into the article, but is stored along with that revision of the page This means that authors can revert to an older version of the page, should it be necessary because a mistake has been made or the page has been vandalized. ie if you make a mistake, you just revert back to the old page ..so easy

"Recent Changes" Page : "Recent Changes" Page This is a list of edits made within a given time frame. You can see every change made to a wiki. It is also a very useful tool to see who accesses your wiki and what they do there, comments and additions, and supervision. With students, I see what they do almost as son as they do it.

Private Wikis : Private Wikis Many wiki communities are private, particularly within enterprises. They are often used as internal documentation for in-house systems and applications.

Research Communities : Research Communities Wikis are an active topic of research. Two well-known wiki conferences are The International Symposium on Wikis (WikiSym) Wikimania, the Wikimedia Foundation conference
