Chapter01 Vav : Chapter01 Vav The Hebrew Letter “Vav” is the sixth letter of the Hebrew aleph-bet (alphabet). It is a letter that makes the sound of V. It can also serve as a vowel holder or vowel substitute where it can make sound of O or OO

Vav Memory : Vav Memory The only memory aid that I know of for Vav, is that Rabbi Schoolman called it the “vertical” letter. That does have the advantage of reminding us of the sound of the letter, but it doesn’t help me much with a visual image that reminds me of this letter. It is a letter than can easily be confused with some others, there is another that looks just like it except for being wider, so I would remind you that this letter is not wide. Another very important thing to notice about the Vav is that the bottom of it stops at the bottom of the space allotted for a letter. So to avoid confusing the vav with either of two different letters, keep it in a small space, not too wide, not too long.

How to Write Vav : How to Write Vav Now that we know what a Vav looks like and what sound it represents we will learn how to write it.

Vav Book Print : Vav Book Print The sixth letter of the Hebrew Alphabet is Vav. Vav has the sound of a V. Yes exactly the same sound as the letter Vet which we just learned. But, although Vav makes the same sound as Vet, it is a different letter which would be incorrect if substituted for a Vet. The form given here is what the letter would look like if you saw it in a book. We will now learn how we can write the block form of this letter

Vav Book n Block Print : Vav Book n Block Print The block letter Vav is made with just one simple stroke.

Vav Block Practice : Vav Block Practice The block letter Vav is made with just one simple stroke. Start near the top center of the space, make a short section down and to the right, then straight down to the bottom.

kHolamVav : kHolamVav The other way to represent the vowel kHolam is by inserting a Vav into the word with the dot above it. When used in this manner, the Vav does NOT make the V sound but only the Oh sound. Think of the Vav as carrying the vowel. WHY? Why sometimes use a letter to carry a vowel and we hear only the sound of the vowel?

kHolamVav02 : kHolamVav02 For many words it is simply the “right” way to spell the word. The basic reason is that when a word is written without vowels, there are some possible words which could not be distinguished from each other. When the vowels aren’t shown, the vav which had been holding the kHolam remains in the word as an indication which vowel would be there if vowels were shown.

kHolamVav03 : kHolamVav03 This sometimes creates a new problem because now you can’t tell whether the vav makes a V sound or an O sound. As we learn words, this situation will become a little bit clearer.

kHolamVav04 : kHolamVav04 When the “Oh” vowel appears with a letter, it is called a kHolam. When the vav is used to carry the kHolam, then we will refer to it as a kHolam-vav. In either case it makes the “Oh” sound. The vav is usually silent when it is carrying a kHolam. It is serving only as a vowel carrier.

Another Vowel-ooh : Another Vowel-ooh The next vowel that we will learn also comes in two forms. Today we will look at the form that uses the Vav to carry the vowel. This vowel makes the sound “oo” as in “Boo”.The Shoorooq has a dot in the middle of the Vav. (this will cause a little confustion later, I will explain more we we get there) Although it looks like a dagaysh, the vav with the dot is actually a vowel. AnotherVowel

2-homework : 2-homework The following are all real Hebrew words. Your job for today is to divide them into syllables, count the number of syllables, and pronounce the words. In a few weeks you will be looking these same words up in a dictionary. Don’t worry about the meaning for today, I will tell you the English equivalent of some of them, the others will be a mystery for a few weeks.

2-homework02 : 2-homework02 One of the words you may remember from last week. (don’t worry if you don’t, we will see them again) Some of you may recognize one of the words if you say the word to yourself or out loud, then listen to yourself. Eventually you will be able to recognize the words when you see them, for now I think it is easier to try to recognize the sound.

2-homework03 : 2-homework03 If we have time, this will be done in class, otherwise, it is your homework for next week. If we finish it in class, your only homework is to review what we have done and practice writing these words on the Hebrew paper provided or on your own paper.

2-hwHebrew : 2-hwHebrew The red line for the beginning of the first syllable is provided, your job is to add as many lines as are required for syllable dividers and ends.
