1st German lection © Metodi Meißner 2011 In this lection you find an overview about the most important phrases for German language. furthermore you will find information about how to read and to spell and notes about grammar.  1: The most important phrases for a conversation 1a) Greetings: Hello -Hallo Good morning -Guten Morgen →notice that all nouns are written with a capital letter Good day -Guten Tag Good evening -Guten Abend My name is -Ich heiße /mein Name ist What is your name? -Wie heißen/heißt Sie/du? //Wie ist Ihr/dein Name? 1b) Start a conversation: How are you? -Wie geht es ihnen/dir? Possible answear: I am fine -Mir geht es gut //I do not feel well -Mir geht es schlecht Where are you from? -Woher kommst du/kommen Sie? Possible answear: I am from.... -Ich komme aus.... How old are you? -Wie alt bist du/sind Sie? 1c) Asking for something: Excuse me please.... -Entschuldigen sie bitte.... Where is the.... -Wo ist der/die/das.... Vocabulary which you could use here: the trainstation -der Bahnhof the airport -der Flughafen the underground station -die U-Bahnstation the shop -das Geschäft the street -die Straße the "Alexandersquare" -der "Alexanderplatz" the next..... -der/die/das nächste..... the hospital -das Krankenhaus the policedepartment -das Polizeirevier →in German language you have words of male, female and neural gender. the certain/uncertain articles are: der/ein-for words of male gender die/eine-for words of female gender das/ein-for words of neutral gender →You can use the polite way of contact or the more personal. Sie-polite form in singular and plural du-personal form in singular ihr-personal form in plural 1st German lection © Metodi Meißner 2011  2: How to read and to spell The Alphabet in German language: A; a/Ä; ä → A like the "a" in the word "arch" and can be combined with "u" like in the German word "Haus" /Ä has to be pronounced like the "a" of the English word "apple" and "Ä" in combination with "u" has to be pronounced same as "Eu". B; b C; c → possible in a combination with "h" like the German word "Sicherheit" (savety) D; d E; e → like the first "e" of the word "engine" or in a combination with "u" like the German word "Eule" (owl) which has to be spelled as "oi" in the English word "oil" F; f G; g H; h I; i J; j K; k L; l M; m N; n O; o /Ö; ö →the pronunciation is same as "eux" in French language P; p Q; q R; r S; s /ß →"S" can be combined with "ch" like in the German word "Schule" ( school) which has to be spelled as "sh" in English language T; t U; u /Ü;ü→ "Ü" is pronounced as "u" in French language V; W X; x Y; y Z; z →spelling like "ts" in English language
