Positive Mental Health : Positive Mental Health -being comfortable with yourself -feeling good about yourself -being able to meet the demands of life -being able to express emotions in healthy ways -being able to cope with the stress of daily life

Personality- an individual’s unique pattern of characteristics (blend of physical, mental, and social traits). : Personality- an individual’s unique pattern of characteristics (blend of physical, mental, and social traits). Four factors which influence personality: 1.       Heredity- transmission of traits from one generation to the next. 2.       Environment- everything that is around you and its influence upon you. 3.       Culture- blend of the influence of the people in your home, city, state, and nation. 4.       Self-Concept- all of the beliefs you have about yourself including a self-evaluation.

Ideal Self- your conscience; how you ought to be or how you would like to be. Public Self- the view or opinion you would like others to have of you.  Private Self- the actual you. : Ideal Self- your conscience; how you ought to be or how you would like to be. Public Self- the view or opinion you would like others to have of you.  Private Self- the actual you. The Three Selves

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Five levels in order from lowest to highest) : Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Five levels in order from lowest to highest) 1st Level: Physiological Needs: (basic needs; air, food, water, sleep, exercise, etc.) 2nd Level: Safety & Security: (safety needs; shelter, income, rules/laws, etc.)   3rd Level: Love & Affection: (social needs; love, acceptance, friends, etc.)   4th Level: Self-Esteem :(esteem needs; achieve successes, self-respect or worth, approval of others, etc)   5th Level: Self-Actualization: (making full use of your abilities; a process that continues for a lifetime; highest level in Maslow’s hierarchy; realizing your talents and developing your capabilities: i.e. Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bill Gates, etc.)

Expressing Emotions : Expressing Emotions Emotions- the feelings you have inside you in response to events and life situations

Types of Emotions : Types of Emotions Love- a strong affection or liking for someone or something; (affects mental health more than any other emotion; your ability to give and receive love influences your mental health) Rejection- feel abandoned and unloved and no longer of any worth. Hurt- feeling distressed and harmed

Anxiety- relates to an anticipated or imagined situation (increased heart rate, sweaty hands, cold feet, tightness in chest, difficulty breathing, nervous stomach, headaches, tense muscles) (Exercise is one way to cope with anxiety) Anger- feeling of being irritated, annoyed, and furious. Guilt- feeling of having done wrong, or of being at fault. Depression- feeling of being sad, unhappy, discouraged, and “down in the dumps”. (most common mental health problem for teenagers)

Defense Mechanisms : Defense Mechanisms Suppression- involves delaying or postponing emotional responses to allow yourself time to reason, plan and think. Defense Mechanism- a behavior that you use to cope with uncomfortable situations or emotions. (compensation, daydreaming, displacement, idealization, identification, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, regression, repression, sublimation, substitution)
