Figurative Language : Figurative Language Figurative Language is the use of words that go beyond their ordinary meaning. It requires you to use your imagination to figure out the author's meaning Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language.  Today we will learn about two different types of figurative language: SIMILES & METAPHORS.

Simile : Simile A simile uses the words “like” or “as”to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike.EXAMPLES She was as busy as a bee. The man was as blind as a bat. His teeth were as bright as the sun.

Metaphor : Metaphor The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison.A simile would say you are like something; a metaphor is more positive - it says you are something. EXAMPLES: The sky is a snotty handkerchief. The streets were a furnace. My heart is a lonely hunter .

Slide 6 : GET THE PICTURE METAPHOR SIMILE BOTH TYPES OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE MAKE COMPARISONS Directly compares two unlike things without using “like” or “as” Uses “like” or “as” to compare two unlike things.
