Going Green Is Only The First Step! : Going Green Is Only The First Step! Self-Control
&
The Environment
Lesson 7
Review : Name some ways society has been affected by a lack of self-control.
Through crimes such as thefts, school shootings, and road rage.
How can practicing self-control help society?
By remembering to respect the possessions of others, to speak in a respectful manner at all times, and to avoid conflicts by considering the best way to REACT and RESPOND to situations that trigger anger. By valuing the safety and well-being of others. By stopping and thinking about the consequences of actions and how choices affect others. Review
Self-control and the Environment : So far you have been given the tools how to improve your personal life and the lives of others with self-control.
The concept of self-control expands to our environment.
Some forms of pollution exist because of our misuse and abuse. Self-control and the Environment
Just what is pollution? : The contamination of the environment with waste material.
Two types:
Natural pollutants
Man-made Just what is pollution?
Slide 5 : What are some of the ways you think our environment is being polluted?
By getting rid of waste (materials that cannot decompose) into rivers and lakes.
Oil spills
Excessive use of fuel burning, creating carbon monoxide in the atmosphere.
My, how things have changed.. : Technology makes it easy to assume that there will always be an abundance of supplies and resources.
Technological advances are not without their consequences.
It is up to us to make choices that will allow us to advance and protect. My, how things have changed..
What goes around comes around… : What you put into something is what you get out of it.
The effort and thought that we put into how we care for our environment will determine whether we reap positive or negative results.
Let’s take a closer look:
Less than 1% of all water is safe.
Pollutants and disease have been found in some of our food supply.
Millions of tons of garbage and toxic waste products are dumped into the ocean.
Some places endure sicknesses due to heavy smog. What goes around comes around…
Let’s take a closer look at air : It doesn’t matter how long you can hold your breath, sooner or later you have to breath.
Automobile Industry
Automobile Exhausts
Industrial factories
Some of these chemicals react with the atmosphere and produce smog.
Acid rain Let’s take a closer look at air
Thirsty Anyone? : Over 70% of our planet surface is water, but only a small percentage of that is suitable for humans to use.
1.2 billion people live without access to safe water.
2.5 billion people without sanitation Thirsty Anyone?
Just the facts on water pollution.. : 1.5 billion people lack safe drinking water.
5 million deaths per year are because of waterborne diseases.
In 2000, 11,270 beaches were closed due to raw sewage and toxins.
People who ingest polluted water containing PCBs can develop cancer and produce children with birth defects.
Half the drinking water in the U.S. comes from groundwater
25%-75% of that groundwater is contaminated from leaking underground storage tanks.
One cup of gasoline can pollute 350,000 gallons of water. Just the facts on water pollution..
The Damage is Already Done : We are at great risk when our food is contaminated.
PCBS
Are just one of the man-made contaminates in our streams and lakes. The Damage is Already Done
Cannibalistic cows? : Food becomes polluted when people within our society do not stop and think.
Cows eat grass…right?
Some believe they shouldn’t, which has lead to Mad Cow Disease or CJD.
Did cattle ranchers stop to think about the consequences? Cannibalistic cows?
The Saga Continues… : The diet of the world’s inhabitants is agriculturally based.
Science has sought ways to reduce loss of crops.
GMO
Insecticide/herbicide The Saga Continues…
Take a bite out of this! : The only person you can control is you.
A few tips to help you control your actions regarding the environment:
Don’t litter.
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Know your water.
Never pour toxic chemicals like paint thinner or pesticides down the drain.
Wash your fruit, veggies, eggs, meat and then soak them in salt water to help remove any chemicals. Take a bite out of this!
What have I learned? : As caretakers, we need to consider how our actions affect the environment.
Pollution is the contamination of the environment with waste materials.
Everyone in our society, from leaders to policy makers, to owners of factories and refineries must take responsibility for preserving our environment.
To practice self-control we must stop and consider how our daily choices affect the ability of all life forms to survive and function.
I will not wait until I am adversely affect by contaminants. What have I learned?
Slide 16 : This is the only planet I have to live on, therefore I will do my best to care for it and practice self-control in all my actions.
