As-Salaat (The Prayer) : As-Salaat (The Prayer) Salaah (pl Salaat) is the common name for the formal prayer, which follows a set pattern or format.
There are essentially 2 types of Salaat – Compulsory (Fardh) and Voluntary (most often referred to as Sunnah or Nafil).
The compulsory or fardh Salaat are the 5 prayers that we pray each day
From the Holy Qur’an : From the Holy Qur’an In the name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Most Kind
All praise is for Allah, Lord of the Worlds
The Most Merciful, The Most Kind
Master of the Day of Judgement
You alone do we worship and You alone do we ask for help
Show us the long, straight path
The path of those who you have favoured
Not the path of those upon whom you are displeased
Or those who have gone astray Surah al Fatihah 1:1-7
From the Holy Qur’an : From the Holy Qur’an ALM
That is The Book – In It there is no doubt
A guidance for Al Muttaqoon
Those who believe in the Unseen, who establish Salaat (prayers) and from what We have provided them, they spend/give (in charity)
And they are those who believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed to those before you, and they have certainty about the hereafter
They are on guidance from their Lord, and it is them who are ‘Al Muflihoon’ (The Successful Ones) Surah al Baqarah 2:1-5

Dhuhr – From just after the Zenith until Mid afternoon
Asr – From Mid Afternoon til just before Sunset

Times from the Holy Qur’an : Times from the Holy Qur’an Surah An-Nisaa v103
…Verily, As-Salaat (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours.
Times from the Holy Qur’an : Times from the Holy Qur’an Surah Al-Insan v25
And remember the Name of your Lord every morning and afternoon (Morning (Fajr), Zuhr, and ‘Asr prayers).
Times from the Holy Qur’an : Times from the Holy Qur’an Surah Ta-Ha 130
So bear patiently (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) what they say, and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and during some hours of the night, and at the ends of the day that you may become pleased (with the reward which Allah shall give you).
Times from the Holy Qur’an : Times from the Holy Qur’an Surah Al-Israa 78
Perform As-Salaat from mid-day till the darkness of the night (i.e. the Zuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib and ‘Ishâ’ prayers), and recite the Qur’ân in the early dawn (i.e. the morning prayer). Verily, the recitation of the Qur’ân in the early dawn is ever witnessed
Before we begin…. : Before we begin…. There are some conditions to consider before we begin to pray. For example:
Time – Salaah is not valid before it’s time under normal conditions – be sure it is the right time for the right prayer
Tahaarah – Purity. We must be in a state of ‘Wudhu’ (Ritual Purity) and our bodies and clothes etc must be ‘clean’. (Clean means free from major impurities such as excretia, blood etc)
Purity of the Place of prayer
Adequate Covering of the Body – for Men this means that at the very least to be covered from navel to knees. For Women this means the whole body being covered except Face, Hands and Feet.
Facing the Qiblah – the Right Direction
Intention
The Salaat : The Salaat Takbir Tahrimah
Men – Whilst standing, raise both the hands, palms facing front, to the level of their ears
Women - Whilst standing, raise both the hands, palms facing front, to the level of their shoulders
We say “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greater than all, or simply ‘God is Greatest’)
Placing the Hands : Placing the Hands Men – Lower the hands after Takbir Tahrimah. The hands should be placed on the front of the abdomen, just underneath the navel. The hands must be placed with the right palm on top of the left.
Women - Lower the hands after Takbir Tahrimah. The hands should be placed on the front of the chest. The hands must be placed with the right palm on top of the left.
Thanaa : Thanaa “Subhaana-kallaahummah, wa bihamdika, wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta’ala jadduka, wa laa ilaaha ghairuk”
(Oh Allah, glorified and praiseworthy, and blessed is your name and exalted is your majesty, and there is nothing worthy of worship except You)
Surah al Fatihah : Surah al Fatihah “’A-oodhoo billahi minash-shaytaanir-rajeem. Bismillaahir-Rahmanir-Raheem.
Al Hamdulillaahi Rabbil Alameen. Ar-Rahmanir-Raheem. Maaliki Yawmid-deen. Iyyaaka na’boodu wa iyyaaka nasta’een. Ihdinas-siraatal mustaqeem. Siraata ladheena an amta alayhim, ghairil maghdoobi alayhim wa lad-daaleen.
Ameen”
“I seek refuge with Allah from Shaytaan, the rejected one. In the name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Most Kind.
All praise is for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. The Most Merciful, The Most Kind. Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone do we worship and You alone do we ask for help. Show us the long, straight path. The path of those who you have favoured, Not the path of those who have earned Your anger, or those who have gone astray”
Surah al Ikhlas : Surah al Ikhlas “Qul Huwa-Allahu ahad. Allahu-Samad. Lam yalid, wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakul-lahoo kufoowan ahad”
“Say – He is Allah, the One. Allah the absolute on whom all depends. He does not have children and he was not born, and there is nothing that can be compared to Him”
Rukoo’ : Rukoo’ We say “Allahu Akbar. We then bow from the waist, until our backs are level, with our hands on our knees. Fingers should be spaced apart but not widely.
The head should be roughly level with the back.
Whilst bowing, we say “Subhaana Rabbi-al Adheem” 3 times (“Glory to my Lord the Supreme”)
Saying “Allahu Akbar” we then return to standing, hands by our sides. As we rise we say “Samee-Allahu Limaan Hamida” (“Allah hears those who praise Him”) and then “Rabbana Wa Lakal-Hamd” (“Our Lord, and to you is our praise”)
Sujood : Sujood Saying “Allahu Akbar”, we descend to the floor to prostrate to our Lord.
The Sunnah method of this is to descend to the knees first, then to the hands, then the forehead.
The Sajdah is described as being on 7 points – the face (inc forehead & the tip of the nose), the 2 x hands, the 2 x knees and the 2 x feet. The fingers and the toes should face Qibla.
We say “Subhaana Rabbi-al A’la” 3 times. (Glory to my Lord the Most High)
Saying “Allahu Akbar” we rise from Sujood to sit on our knees, kneeling. We then say “Allahu Akbar” again and go into Sujood for a second time, repeating the “Subhaana Rabbi-Al A’la” 3 times.
Again, we then rise from Sujood saying “Allahu Akbar” either to stand and repeat the sequence, or to sit and make Tashahhud
Tashahhud : Tashahhud After the first 2 rakat (or cycles) in any prayer, we sit/kneel after sujood and recite the Tashahhud. This is also the case after the 3rd rakah in Maghrib prayer and also after completing 3rd and 4th rakat in the other prayers
Tashahhud : Tashahhud We say: “At-taheeyatu liLlahi wa salawaatu wat-tayyibatu. Assalamu alaika-ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatohu. Assalamu alaina, wa ala ibadiLlaahis-saaliheen, Ash-hadoo an laa ilaaha il Allahu, wa ash-hadoo anna Muhammadan Abdohu wa Rasooluh”
(“All prayers and worship through words, action and sanctity are for Allah alone. Peace be upon you oh Prophet and the mercy and blessings of Allah. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I witness that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is his servant and messenger”)
(“Oh Allah, send peace upon Muhammad and the people of Muhammad as you sent peace upon Ibraheem and his people. Oh Allah bless Muhammad and his people as you blessed Ibraheem and his people”)
End Dua : End Dua We say: “Rabbi-jalni muqimas-salaati wa min dhurriyaati. Rabbana wa taqabbal du’a. Rabbanaghfirlee, wa li walidaya, wa lil mu’minina yawma yaqumul hisaab.”
(“Our lord, make me and my children steadfast in prayer. Our Lord accept our prayer. Our Lord forgive me and my parents and those who have faith on the Day of Judgement”)
Salaam : Salaam Turn the head to the right and say: “Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.”
Then Turn the head to the left and say: “Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.”
(“Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah”)
This concludes the Salaah.
The ‘Must Do’s’of Salaat : The ‘Must Do’s’of Salaat Fardh:
Standing
Reciting The Qur’an
Rukoo (bowing)
Sajdah (Prostrating)
Second sitting with Tashahhud
Waajib:
Reciting Surah Al Fatiha and at least 3 ayats (verses) of another Surah in each of the first two rakat (cycles)
Completing Rukoo and Sajdah (both must be fulfilled properly)
First Sitting (with Tashahhud)
Sequence – The acts and words must be in the right order
Salaam – at the end of the prayer
What Invalidates Salaat? : What Invalidates Salaat? Leaving out any of the ‘Must Do’s
Speaking – ie speaking that is not part of the prayer
Eating/Drinking
Excessive Moving
Laughing during Salaah – this actually invalidates Wudhu according to hadith
What if we make a mistake?! : What if we make a mistake?! If we make a mistake, for example forgetting what number of Rakah we are on or forgetting a Wajib part of the Salaat, we can save the prayer by peforming Sajdat as Sahw – the Sajdah of Forgetting.
If we forget which number, ie was it 3rd Rakah or 4th Rakah, go with the lower of the two and complete as normal.
When you make salaam – then say “Allahu Akbar” again and go back into Sajdah. Say “Allahu Akbar” again and rise to sit before repeating the Sajdah.
Now rise to sit and complete the end of the prayer again from Tashahhud to Salaam.
For Absolute Beginners : For Absolute Beginners Islam is not meant to be difficult and where there are difficulties, exceptions are often made
The minimum one can do when learning to pray is to complete the actions described in prior slides and to say the following in each step:
SubhaanAllah
Wa Al Hamdu Lillah
Wa Laa Ilaaha Il Allah
Wa Allahu Akbar
This is enough to discharge your Fardh prayers whilst you are learning – but you still need to learn!
