Slide 1 : Dealing with Phrasal Verbs

Slide 2 : PHRASAL VERBS Using English as a native speaker would

Slide 3 : Phrasal verbs are verbs with one or two prepositions or particles that either emphasize the meaning of the verb or have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT meaning from the individual words contained in the phrasal verb. We need to sit down and talk about this!! I‘ve been looking forward to this for a long time!!

Slide 4 : Phrasal verbs are classified in separable and non separable according to certain rules: When the phrasal verb has 2 prepositions or particles, it is usually non separable: I Look forward to going on vacation NOT: I Look forward going on to vacation

Slide 5 : The phrasal verb is separable when a noun or a pronoun goes between the verb and the preposition and/or particle in the phrasal verb. Throw away the trash Throw the trash away Throw it away When a pronoun is the object of the sentence, it can only go BETWEEN THE VERB AND THE PARTICLE Throw away it NEVER…

Slide 6 : When a noun is the object of a phrasal verb: Throw away the trash It can go between the verb and the particle Throw the trash away or after the particle in the phrasal verb.

Slide 7 : Replace the word in Italics with an appropriate phrasal verb to complete the sentence. Get rid of Put up with Come up with Look back on Have you thrown away your old typewriter? We must try to find a solution to the problem. When you remember the past, it is easy to see the mistakes you’ve made. I don’t think I can tolerate this awful situation anymore.

Slide 8 : You’re making that up!! Yeah keep on doing that!! I came across them the other day at the mall… She took it all off!! What do these mean!?

Slide 9 : Figure them out!! Look at these sentences and try to figure out the meaning of the phrasal verbs by the context. They don’t want to insist anymore, they have given up on the idea!! The kids are very impatient, they are really looking forward to going to Disney!! …I don’t really think that it’s true, I think she is making that up… It’s her first time, she just took up the yoga lessons on Monday.

Slide 10 : I came across the Sheldons the other day at the supermarket, it was quite a coincidence!! She was so wet she had to take all her clothes off! I said they couldn’t go but they kept on asking for permission! He is very good at getting what he wants, he could get away with murder!! He tripped over the chair and fell on the floor with a loud bang…
