Description
The basic concepts in question are work-energy theorem and conservation of mechanical energy. The lecture points out where these are applicable and where they are not..Kinetic energy is lost in inelastic collision as heat due to internal frictional forces but momentum is conserved Using the example of motion of simple pendulum the equivalence between work-energy theorem and conservation of energy is shown. The maximum angular displacement, phase angle and oscillation equations are obtained using W-E theorem. Starting from the Newton's law of Gravitation the expression for orbital velocity and time period of revolution of Earth around sun is derived and approximate value mentioned.Next kinetic energy is calculated and relation with potential and total energy is also evaluated. All these leads to a brilliant explanation of escape velocity.
