Equations of motion.
What is Motion ? : What is Motion ? When a body continuously changes its position with respect to its surroundings, it is in motion.
What is Distance ? : By S.C.Benjamin 5 What is Distance ? Length of path of a moving body is the distance moved by the
body.
Distance has only the magnitude and no direction and therefore
it is a scalar quantity.
The SI ( international standard ) unit of distance is metre (m).
What is displacement ? : By S.C.Benjamin 6 What is displacement ? The displacement of a body is the shortest distance between
its initial and final positions.
The displacement has magnitude as well as direction and
therefore it is a vector quantity.
The SI (international standard) unit of displacement is metre (m).
What is Speed ? Average Speed ? : By S.C.Benjamin 7 What is Speed ? Average Speed ? The speed of a moving body is the distance moved by it in unit
interval of time.
The speed has only the magnitude and no fixed direction
(we ignore the direction) therefore it is a scalar quantity.
The SI unit of speed is metre per second ( m/s)
What is Uniform Speed ? : By S.C.Benjamin 8 What is Uniform Speed ? When a body moves equal distances in equal intervals
of time it has uniform speed.
What is Velocity ? : By S.C.Benjamin 9 What is Velocity ? The velocity of a moving body is the distance
moved by it in a particular direction in unit
interval of time.
The velocity has direction as well as magnitude
and therefore it is a vector quantity.
What is Uniform (or constant) Velocity ? : By S.C.Benjamin 10 What is Uniform (or constant) Velocity ? When a body moves equal distances in a particular direction
in equal intervals of time, it has a uniform velocity or constant
velocity.
It must be realized that the body that is moving with the uniform
or constant velocity is moving with constant speed along a straight
line.
The velocity of a moving body changes when either the direction
of motion or the magnitude of velocity or both change.
Average Velocity : By S.C.Benjamin 11 Average Velocity
Let us learn from a Distance-timeGraph : By S.C.Benjamin 12 Let us learn from a Distance-timeGraph One can find the distance moved at different instants.
The speed of the moving body can be found.
The speed time graph cannot tell us the direction of motion at any time.
Displacement-time Graph for a body moving along a straight line.(1) : By S.C.Benjamin 13 Displacement-time Graph for a body moving along a straight line.(1) What is displacement at 2,4,5,7 and 8 s ?
What is distance moved by the body in 8 s ?
Distance moved in 7 s ?
Velocity at 2 and 7 s ?
Velocity at 5 s ?
Average velocity during entire journey ?
Average speed during entire journey ?
Displacement-time Graph for motionof a body along a straight line.(2) : By S.C.Benjamin 14 Displacement-time Graph for motionof a body along a straight line.(2) What are displacements of the body at 1, 2, 4 and 8 s ?
What is velocity during first second ? Between 1 and 2 s ? At 3 s ? At 6 s ?
What is acceleration at 3 and 5 s ? During first second ?
Average velocity during last 4 s ? During first 4 s ?
Distance moved in 2, 4 and 8 ?
Average speed during the entire journey ?
Velocity-time Graph for motion of a body along straight line : By S.C.Benjamin 15 Velocity-time Graph for motion of a body along straight line What is velocity at 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 s ?
During what interval of time velocity is uniform ?
What is acceleration at 2, 5, and 7 s ?
Displacement in 4 and 8 s ?
Average velocity over 8 s ?
Distance moved in 8 s ?
Average speed over 8 s ?
Sketch an acceleration-time graph for the motion of this body.
Acceleration –time Graph (continued) : By S.C.Benjamin 16 Acceleration –time Graph (continued) Acceleration is constant at + 5 m/s² for 4 s.
Acceleration is zero between 4 and 6 s.
Acceleration is constant at – 10 m/s² during last 2 s.
Derivations of Equations of Motion : By S.C.Benjamin 17 Derivations of Equations of Motion
