Nika’s mother asked if I wanted to see Nika’s room, and I did. It was off the bathroom, what you might call a walk-in closet. There was a cot in there, one of those canvas army jobs that’s more or less like a hammock up on stilts.
La madre de Nina me preguntó si quería ver el cuarto de Nina, y eso fue lo que hice. Estaba al lado del baño, lo que se podría llegar a decir ……….. había un COT allí, uno de esos CANVAS ARMY JOBS que mas o menos se parece a un HAMMOCK en zancos.
I flashed back to the room in Nika’s house. Of course. She was creating the childhood room she’d never had.
A penas pude mirar el cuardo de Nina en su casa. Por supuesto. Ella estaba creando el cuarto de niños que nunca hubo de tener.
“This is it,” Nika’s mother said. “Where Nickie grew up. She always knew what she wanted and she got it, too. Money, horses, cars. She picked Ron Ballinger out of a newspaper story and then she went up there to Austin and married him.”
“She what? What do you mean?”
“Here.” She produced a page from an old newspaper citing the fifty richest men in Texas. Ron was one of several whose name had been circled.
“He was the first one she went after, too. Got him right out of the chute. She was only seventeen when he married her.”
“Aquí estamos,” la madre de Nina dijo. “Donde Nickie creció. Ella siempre supo lo que quiso y lo conseguía también. Dinero, caballos, autos. Ella eligió a Ron Ballinger en una historia del periódico y luego fue hasta Austin y se casó con el”

“Tome” Ella sacó una página de un Viejo diario citando a los 50 hombres mas ricos de Tejas. Ron era uno de los tantos nombres que habían sido marcados con un círculo.
“Fue el primero al que fue también. Lo consiguió justo afuera del CHUTE. Ella tenía solo 17 años cuando se casaron”

“I always knew those horses of hers would kill her, though,” Nika’s mother said.[…] “They’re big, they’re mean. It seemed like it just had to happen one of these days.”
“You think one of the horses killed your daughter,” I said.
“That’s the way Mr. Ballinger’s secretary told it to me when she called to say my Nikie had passed and how they took care of the funeral and all.”
Ron, the bum, hadn’t even bothered to call her himself. And lest she show up and embarrass anybody, they’d called her after the fact.
“Siempre supe que esos caballos de ella la matarían, sin embargo”, la madre de Nina dijo.
“Son grandes, son malos. Parece como si fuera algo que tuviera que pasar uno de estos días”.
“Usted cree que uno de los caballos mató a su hija”, dije yo.
“Así es como me lo contó el secretario del Señor Ballinger cuando ella llamó para decir que mi Nikie había muerto y como se harían cargo del funeral y todo”.
Ron, el BUM, ni siquiera se había molestado en llamarla el mismo a ella. Y LEST ella apareciera y le hiciera pasar vergüenza delante de todos, ellos la hubieran llamado a ella después del hecho.

I don’t know how I felt as I drove on to Braedock . I was weary, but it wasn’t only physical, brought on by the drive and the fact that I hadn’t had any sleep the night before. It was as though the weariness inherent in Nika’s home, Nika’s past, Nika’s mother, had begun to weigh me down.
No se como me sentía mientras manejaba hacia Braedock. Estaba ido, pero no era solamente físico, como resultado del viaje y el hecho de que no había dormido nada la noche anterior. Era como que la inherente WEARINESS de la casa de Nina, el pasado de Nina, la madre de Nina, habían comenzado a tirarme abajo.
