High Frequency verb tenses in basic essay writing
Background information: If you are writing an essay, it is critical that correct verb tense is used. This document will cover the high frequency tenses used in basic essay writing. The best website for fully understanding the English verb tense system is www.englishpage.com.
Present Perfect Continuous
Discussion: Used often in the introduction to connect the past to the present, which sets the stage for the essay.
Example: In recent years the number of people playing extreme sports has been increasing. Many people take the point of view that extreme sports, because of all the serious injuries associated with it, should be banned while others believe extreme sports are the natural evolution of athletics. This essay will discuss both points of view.
Simple Present Tense
Discussion: Used often because essays give viewpoints. In our essays, we discuss the way things are in the world and what we believe.
Example: People in today’s world feel that there are a lot of environmental problems, but they do nothing about. They just continue with their bad habits.
Present Perfect
Discussion: Used to state that something happened in the past, but the time that it took place is not important or not known
Example: As we know, many children in today’s world do not have proper nutrition. In the past, many governmental agencies have attempted to help parents better understand nutrition through a variety of methods. For instance, they have tried awareness campaigns, Internet websites and local workshops for parents. However, they were not able to make a significant impact.
Simple Past Tense
Discussion: Used often to give evidence from the past to support our beliefs. Considering that essays discuss our opinions and discuss our view on the world, it is a very important verb tense.
Example: The newspapers reports environmental issues every day. For example, yesterday I saw three articles about beach pollution.
Basic Modals: Will, would, could, might, should
Discussion: Used to set up Conditional One and discuss the future and the probability of events based on the writer’s view. It is important when writing an essay that the word will is not overused. Good writers make it clear the degree to which something is possible. This is called modality and it helps create credibility for the writer.
Example: If we give nutritional workshops to the parents, this might help them prepare better food for their children. (conditional one)
Example: If people smoke, they will get cancer. (conditional one)
Note: The use of will is not appropriate because not all people who smoke get cancer. However, it is reasonable to say that it could, may or might cause cancer. Making this type of distinction gives the writer more credibility.
