Biography of Imâm al-Shâfi’ : Biography of Imâm al-Shâfi’ Born in 150H (767 CE) in Ghazza His father died when he was 2 years old and his mother took him to Makka where he grew up as an orphan He memorised the Quran aged 7. By 13 years old he excelled in most of the Islamic sciences and the Arabic language, spending time with the Bedouin tribe of Bani Hudhayl He was appointed as Mufti aged 15

His studies : His studies He spent ten years with Imâm Mâlik in Madina, memorising his Muwatta and learning the principles of Jurisprudence. It was here that he met Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Shaibani He was appointed a Judge in Najran before being accused of starting and uprising after which he was summoned to Iraq He studied and taught in Iraq before settling in Egypt where his teaching became more refined and his methodology became more widely known

His legacy : His legacy A corpus of legal rulings found in a book called ‘al-Umm’ A methodology found in his book ‘al-risala’ Wisdom and advice found in his ‘diwân’ Many students including the great Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal
