Past continuous(progressive) : Past continuous(progressive) Just as present continuous means “s.b. is in the middle of doing s.t., past continuous means “s.b. was in the middle of doing s.t.” NOW PRESENT CONTINUOUS NOW PAST PAST CONTINUOUS
PAST CONTINUOUS VS. SIMPLE PAST : PAST CONTINUOUS VS. SIMPLE PAST Past continuous can be used side by side to show two activities happening at the same time.
While my wife was cleaning the house, I was taking care of the baby.
PAST CONTINUOUS VS. SIMPLE PAST : PAST CONTINUOUS VS. SIMPLE PAST More often past continuous is used with simple past to mean that, while something was under way, another action interrupted the process. Simple past appears in “when-clause” which follows the main clause.
E.g. Nicole was watching TV when the phone rang.
