Audience Theories 1 : Audience Theories 1 Audiences are ‘injected’ with what they view / hear in the mass media on a daily basis – they are passive consumers who absorb all the information. Their opinions are shaped by the mass media. Different people use the media to gratify (fulfill) different purposes and will use different types of media in different ways. Audiences are active consumers of media and may interpret the same piece of media (a TV programme for example) in many different ways, depending on social and cultural background, age and gender.
