Exercise تَمْرِينٌ Highlight all the verbs that you can identify in the ayat below. (١ لا يُسْأَلُ عَمَّا يَفْعَلُ وَهُمْ يُسْأَلُونَ (21: 23) (٢ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (49: 5) (٣ لَنْ تَنْفَعَكُمْ أَرْحَامُكُمْ وَلا أَوْلادُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ (60: 3) (٤ إِنَّمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ أَوْثَانًا وَتَخْلُقُونَ إِفْكًا إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ لا يَمْلِكُونَ لَكُمْ رِزْقًا فَابْتَغُوا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الرِّزْقَ وَاعْبُدُوهُ وَاشْكُرُوا لَهُ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ (29: 17) (٥ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَى فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانْظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَى قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ سَتَجِدُنِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ (37: 102) (٦ سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأرْضِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ (59: 1) (٧ يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأرْضِ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ (62: 1) Exercise تَمْرِينٌ Convert the verbs below to Form II. Then translate each one. Meaning Form II Meaning Form I قَتَلَ – يَقْتُلُ ذَبَحَ – يَذْبَحُ نَزَلَ - يَنْزِلُ حَمِدَ – يَحْمَدُ سَبَقَ – يَسْبِقُ شَرُفَ – يَشْرُفُ كَرُمَ – يَكْرُمُ Can you see any connections between the meanings of the different forms? Meanings of Form II To make someone do something. Examples: To enter. دَخَلَ – يَدْخُلُ To make someone enter. دَخَّلَ - يُدَخِّلُ To descend / to be revealed. نَزَلَ - يَنْزِلُ To make someone descend / to reveal, to send down. نَزَّلَ - يُنَزِّلُ To do something with intensity or repetition. Example: To kill. قَتَلَ – يَقْتُلُ To massacre. قَتَّلَ - يُقَتِّلُ To declare or estimate someone as having a particular quality. Example: To disbelieve. كَفَرَ - يَكْفُرُ To declare or call someone a disbeliever. كَفَّرَ - يُكَفِّرُ ~*~ Note: These are to be used as guidelines only. Always consult the dictionary for the exact meaning! Exercise تَمْرِينٌ Complete the tables below. (Sound) Plural جَمْع Dual مُثَنَّى Single مُفْرَد غَائِبٌ 3rd person فَعَّلَ مُذَكَّر Male غَائِبٌ 3rd person مُؤَنَّث Female مُخَاطَبٌ 2nd person مُذَكَّر Male مُخَاطَبٌ 2nd person مُؤَنَّث Female مُتَكَلّمٌ 1st person مُذَكَّر وَ مُؤَنَّث Both (Sound) Plural جَمْع Dual مُثَنَّى Single مُفْرَد غَائِبٌ 3rd person يُفَعِّلُ مُذَكَّر Male غَائِبٌ 3rd person مُؤَنَّث Female مُخَاطَبٌ 2nd person مُذَكَّر Male مُخَاطَبٌ 2nd person مُؤَنَّث Female مُتَكَلّمٌ 1st person مُذَكَّر وَ مُؤَنَّث Both The Ism Faa’il and the Ism Maf’ool How to get to the Ism Faa’il: Take the singular, masculine, 3rd person, present tense verb, i.e. يُفَعِّلُ Replace the yaa at the beginning with a meem having a dommah. And since it is a noun, the last letter gets a tanween. So it becomes: مُفَعِّلٌ Change the harakah on the second last letter to a kasrah if it isn’t that already. How to get to the Ism Maf’ool: Take the ism faa’il, i.e. مُفَعِّلٌ Change the harakah on the second last letter to a fat-hah: مُفَعَّلٌ Exercise تَمْرِينٌ Complete the tables below. Then translate them. (١ فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلامٍ حَلِيمٍ (37: 101) (٢ قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُكَذِّبُونِ (26: 12) (٣ يُنَزِّلُ الْمَلائِكَةَ بِالرُّوحِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ (16: 2) (٤ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَآمَنُوا بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ كَفَّرَ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ (47: 2) (٥ وَرَاوَدَتْهُ الَّتِي هُوَ فِي بَيْتِهَا عَنْ نَفْسِهِ وَغَلَّقَتِ الأبْوَابَ وَقَالَتْ هَيْتَ لَكَ قَالَ مَعَاذَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ رَبِّي أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَايَ إِنَّهُ لا يُفْلِحُ الظَّالِمُونَ (12: 23) (٦ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنَّ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَأً وَآتَتْ كُلَّ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُنَّ سِكِّينًا وَقَالَتِ اخْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنَّ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَهُ أَكْبَرْنَهُ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَاشَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَذَا إِلا مَلَكٌ كَرِيمٌ (12: 31) (٧ وَإِذْ نَجَّيْنَاكُمْ مِنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يُذَبِّحُونَ أَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَاءَكُمْ وَفِي ذَلِكُمْ بَلاءٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ (2: 49) Extra: Open the Qur’an and see how many Form II words you can identify.
