What will we learn today? : What will we learn today? Matter Physical Nature of Matter Characteristics of Particles of Matter States of Matter and properties CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Matter in general : Matter in general Everything in this universe is made up of material which scientists have named . The air we breathe, the food we eat, stones, clouds, stars, plants and animals, even a small drop of water or a particle of sand every thing is matter. We can also see as we look around that all the things mentioned above occupy space and have mass. In other words, they have both mass and volume. Early Indian philosophers classified matter in the form of five basic elements Panch Tatva i.e. air, earth, fire, sky and water CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Points to remember - SI system : Points to remember - SI system 4 The SI unit of mass is kilogram (kg). The SI unit of volume is cubic metre . The common unit of measuring volume is litre (L) such that 1L = 1 dm3, 1L = 1000 mL, 1 mL = 1 cubic cm. 1 cm = 10 dm

Physical Nature of Matter : Physical Nature of Matter CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy Matter is made up of particles Two thoughts: Matter is continuous Matter is made up of particles like sand. Activity:

Physical Nature of Matter : Physical Nature of Matter Particles of Matter are very small and these are not visible to our necked eyes Activity: CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Characteristics of Particles of Matter : Characteristics of Particles of Matter CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy Particles of mater have space between them Activity: Put an unlit incense stick in a corner of your class. How close do you have to go near it so as to get its smell? Now light the incense stick. What happens? Do you get the smell sitting at a distance? Intermixing of particles of two different types of matter on their own is called diffusion

Characteristics of Particles of Matter : Characteristics of Particles of Matter Particles of matter attract each other: Activity: Take an iron nail, a piece of chalk and a rubber band. Try breaking them by hammering, cutting or stretching. Conclusion: Particles of matter have force acting between them. This force keeps the particles together. The strength of this force of attraction varies from one kind of matter to another. CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

States Of Matter : States Of Matter We can see that matter around us exists in three different: Solid Liquid Gas CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Properties of Solid State : Properties of Solid State Distinct boundaries. Fixed volumes. Negligible compressibility. Tendency to maintain their shape when outside force is applied. CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Properties of Liquid State : Properties of Liquid State No fixed shape but have a fixed volume. They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept. Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not rigid but can be called fluid. Solids and liquids can diffuse into liquids. The rate of diffusion of liquids is higher than that of solids. This is due to the fact that in the liquid state, particles move freely and have greater space between each other as compared to particles in the solid state. CBSEMATHGURUMaking mathematics easy

Properties of Gaseous State : Properties of Gaseous State Gases are highly compressible as compared to solids and liquids. Example: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Compressed natural gas (CNG) Rate of diffusion of solids and liquids are lesser than gas. 12
