Alight Education Services : Alight Education Services Welcome to Read and Talk ESL. Today we will. Read several short news articles. Discuss the content of the news articles, and hopefully enjoy a lively conversation. Please note: this is a fluency class, meaning I will be doing minimal correcting. Participants should try to do as much talking as possible to maximize their practice. Let’s get started.

Alight Education Services : Alight Education Services Warm-Up…complete the sentences When you don't get enough sleep... In my country these types of people work the longest hours... When you have too much work, you should...

Alight Education Services : Alight Education Services Volunteers to read the passage? Japan's corporate warriors aren't getting enough sleep -- and it's costing the country billions. In the country that gave the world the word "karoshi", or death from overwork, drowsy employees turning up late, taking days off or struggling to stay awake on the job are causing economic losses of some $30 billion a year, according to a survey.

Alight Education Services : Alight Education Services I will read the text aloud, while I am reading, try to answer this question: Does your country have cultural constraints for leaving work early? "The idea is to raise awareness of the problem,” said Makoto Uchiyama, professor and chairman of the department of neuropsychiatry at Nihon University School of Medicine, who conducted the survey. "Not everyone who is sleepy at work is lazy. It's hard to tell your boss that you are sleepy, but ignoring the problem can lead to losses in the long run.” The Japanese routinely work long hours, as much from cultural constraints on leaving before colleagues as from volume of work. Suited salarymen napping, often standing up, area common sight on crowded commuter trains.

Alight Education Services : Alight Education Services I will read the text aloud, while I am reading, try to complete this sentence: Overwork causes… The survey questioned some 3,075 workers at a chemical company on their sleeping and working habits for a month. Some 37 percent of respondents said they had problems sleeping. They said their efficiency at work was reduced by about 40 percent and reported a high frequency of accidents, lateness and absenteeism. Uchiyama said other countries may be in a similar situation. "It may be thought that this is a Japanese problem. But it's not, it's global."

Slide 7 : Grammer: The present continuous is used to talk about something that is happening now or around this time Japanese workers aren't getting enough sleep. I am sending emails to everyone about the problem. It is also used to talk about a future arrangement. We are having a meeting about overwork next month. I am seeing Tom about the problem on Tuesday.
