The Transformational Teacher through Excellence in Teaching - An Exploration of Visualization, Experiential and Active Learning Strategy Approaches in Andragogy : The Transformational Teacher through Excellence in Teaching - An Exploration of Visualization, Experiential and Active Learning Strategy Approaches in Andragogy Objectives
Teachers remain focused on a straightforward lecturing style that is directed towards direct dissemination of knowledge.
As a result, an educated workforce is visible but is not productively employable.
Transformational and innovative teaching methods are the ways forward.
This paper examines how institutions could change innovatively even entrepreneurially, using Andragogy.

Transformation – The Andragogy Approach
The domination of traditional lecturing methods
Technology remains underutilized
Most teachers still distanced from an experiential approach
Rise of educated workforce but are they employable?
Innovative teaching methods for transformation
Andragogy developed by Malcolm Knowles
Dissatisfaction among adult learners with Pedagogy
How adults learn and how best they learn
New learning society – environment requires andragogy
Slide 5 : Transformation – The Andragogy Approach
The learning approach in andragogy involves –
Sensing an issue or problem
Reflecting on it to attain insight
Trying to conceptualize and analyze it
Then testing one’s understanding of the issue
Adults differ in their preferences for these learning modes and thus in their strengths.
Those whose strengths lie in abstract conceptualization learn best from teachers who emphasize theory and analysis
Those whose expertise is experimentation learn best from projects
The reflective observers like to learn in a disengaged fashion
Those whose strength is in learning from experience learn best from discussions with colleagues when working on a problem
Slide 6 : Transformation – the Andragogy approach
A mixture of Learning styles
Different learning styles require different types of learning experiences
Pedagogy ignores the difference among learners.
Slide 7 : Transformation – The Andragogy approach
Adults tend to learn only what they feel needs to be learnt
They learn by doing and focus on problems which they can relate to their experience
Pedagogy does not consider these to be important
The thrust of andragogy is towards learner – centered, problem – focussed experiential learning
Transformation in teaching and learning becomes a reality due to the effectiveness of andragogy
The greatest strength that andragogy has is in its workshops
We will have to keep learning across our lifetimes to keep up with the changes.
The importance of learning how to learn is now evident.
Slide 8 : Transformational Teaching – Active Learning Strategies
Strategically designed class activities
Workshops, presentations, case studies, outbound programs, visual and aural events such as movie based shows and discussions, debates and roleplays
Slide 9 : Facets of Active Learning Strategies
Students engage in more than just passive listening
Students participate in activities
There is less emphasis on information transmission and greater emphasis on developing employability skills
There is greater emphasis on exploration of attitudes and values
Motivation is increased
Students involved in Higher order thinking (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)
But active learning strategies do not seem to be the final solution
Need to deepen the level at which our students integrate learning material.
This is where transformational teaching makes a deep impact.
Slide 10 : Transformational teaching – Experiential approach
Goes beyond passive lecturing
Goes beyond active learning
Promotes positive changes in students’ lives
Teachers are conceptualized as change agents
Slide 11 : Transformative Learning theory
Elegantly simple
Through some event an individual becomes aware of holding a limiting or distorted view
A critical examination leads to a change in the individual’s view
Transforms a part of how the individual makes a meaning out of the world
Critical reflection , a means by which we work through our beliefs and assumptions
Assessing their validity in the light of new experiences or knowledge
Slide 12 : Transformative Learning Theory
Promoting transformation through an activating event
Articulating assumptions
Critical self reflection
Open to alternative viewpoints
Engaging in discourse
Revising assumptions
Acting on revisions, behaving, talking and thinking, congruent with the transformed assumptions or perspectives
Slide 13 : Visualisation or Guided Imagery
Having a picture in one’s head!
Thoughts have a direct influence on the way students feel and behave
Imagination is like a spirited , powerful horse
Visualisation can be used to harness the energy of the imagination!
When a student transforms his or her assumptions , new ways of thinking - it is a magical moment in teaching.
Slide 14 : Concluding Comments
The range of opportunities and transformative possibilities for learning at all levels are immense.
The challenge here, is to integrate visualization, experiential learning and action learning strategies innovatively!
The challenges posed by such a participatory, global andragogy based learning will threaten established pedagogical orders and practices.
The pressing question is how educational institutions
self–consciously embed these new andragogical
applications and approaches.
: The Transformational Teacher thus becomes real.
Thank you.
