This is a brief lesson on Copyright laws. It has been prepared for an audience of upper elementary students, particularly a 5th grade level. This narrated power point will focus on explaining the copyright law, copyright infringements, fair use policy, and creative commons.

What is Copyright? : What is Copyright? Copyright is a form of protection given to authors or creators of “original” pieces of work. Anytime that you create something that falls under one of the following categories, you automatically own it!!! This can be anything literary, musical, dramatic, choreographic works, picture, graph, or sculpture works, motion pictures, sound recordings, or architectural works.

Some Exclusions: : Some Exclusions: Idea, procedures, methods Titles, names, phrases, or slogans Speeches, songs, or performances which are not tangible (never been written down) Government works Common information such as calendars, rulers, tables, etc.

Slide 4 : As the creator, you may: Make copies Distribute copies Publicly perform your work Display your work Make adaptations or modifications YOU may also give this permission to others! What does this mean?

Copyright Infringement : Copyright Infringement Anytime you use something without permission, you are infringing upon the rights of the Copyright holder. Can lead to a lawsuit

Slide 7 : Fair use allows people other than the copyright owner to copy part or, in some cases, all of the work WITHOUT permission. The copyright law allows the use of materials for purposes such as criticisms, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. Fair Use

Slide 9 : Creative Commons Creative Commons allows us to collaborate with others, which is something that we all desire to do (Berkman Panel, 2008.) The Creative Commons website allows anyone to share their photos, songs, drawings, films, stories, etc. automatically.
