While Changing Direct speech into Indirect : While Changing Direct speech into Indirect Am = was are = were/was Is =was was = had been Were = had been will = would Can = could has/have = had Here = there tomorrow = the next day Do not, does not = did not

Rules for changing Direct Speech into Indirect : Rules for changing Direct Speech into Indirect When the reporting or principal verb is in the past tense, all present tenses of the Direct are chnaged into the corresponding past tenses. 1. A simple present becomes simple past. Eg:He said: “I am Busy” She said that she was busy. 2. A present continuous becomes a past continuous. Eg: He said, “My Mother is stitching clothes. He said that his mother was stitching clothes.

Slide 6 : 3. A present perfect becomes a past perfect. Eg: He said, “ I have passed the examination”. He said that he had passed the examination. 4. The ‘shall’ of the Future tense is changed into ‘should’. The ‘will’ of the future tense is changed into’would’. Simple past in the direct becomes past perfect in the indirect.
