Slide 2 : There was a girl. Her name was Betty. She lived in Beaver City, Nebraska. She was a girl of great BEAUTY. However, she was a spoiled little brat. Betty wasn’t liked by anybody except her rich uncle Bob. She was willed everything he owned when he died...if she could get married BEFORE the end of the year.
So, she tried to get a date with guys where she worked. But no one wanted to go out with her. So, her BRAIN was put to work, and decided to put her ad on a dating site online. But nasty comments were left on her profile by almost everybody because they could tell she was a spoiled brat.
After about a month someone finally contacted her about her ad. So, a date and time was set for them to meet. Betty was supposed to pick him up in her car at 9:00 p.m. She got off work early that day to go to the salon and do her hair and nails. Then she drove down the BLOCK to meet Billy.
Betty saw a sign outside said that this was an insane asylum. She figured that it must have been a prank, so she rang the BELL. The door was opened by a nurse who invited her in. She told Betty that Billy was a patient there. Betty didn’t like it, but she decided that she didn’t have any other options.
Betty was warned by the nurse not to look Billy in the eyes as he might try to BITE her. Billy made fun of her the whole time she was there. He laughed at her hair. He laughed at her make up. And he even laughed at the way she talked. Betty wasn’t used to having people treat her (BURN HER TOAST ) like that.
What really threw her for a loop though was that he talked to himself most of the time. But Betty was desperate to get married though. She BELIEVED that Billy would possibly marry her if she would help him get out of the insane asylum. And she was right. He jumped at her offer to get married right away.

Structure: Passive Voice : How to Recognize Active and Passive Sentences
You may be wondering, “How can I recognize a passive voice sentence.” Well here are some steps to be able to do this. Take these two sentences and run through the steps.
Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet. (Active)
Romeo and Juliet was written by Shakespeare. (Passive) Structure: Passive Voice
Structure: Passive Voice : Structure: Passive Voice Find the subject (the main character of the sentence).
Find the main verb (the action that the sentence identifies).
Circle the subject of the sentence. If the subject is not doing the action and is simply receiving the action, then the sentence is passive.
Examine the relationship between the subject and main verb.
Does the subject perform the action of the main verb? (If so, the sentence is active.)
Does the subject sit there while something else -- named or unnamed -- performs an action on it? (If so, the sentence is passive.)
Structure: Passive Voice : What If You Still Can't Tell If It Is Active Or Passive?
If the main verb is a linking verb (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, shall, will, have, has, had) plus the past participle of the main verb then there is no action involved -- it merely describes a state of being. If so, it is in the passive voice.
In the active voice your ideas sound more firm and definitely more determined. We usually use the active voice when we speak or write. However, there is nothing wrong with using the passive voice.
So, don’t think that this is something to stop using. If you use passive voice wisely, like seasoning on food when needed...you will be a much more fluent and proficient language speaker.
Here are some examples of the passive voice with most of the possible tenses: Structure: Passive Voice

Politicians often use passive voice to intentionally obscure the idea of who is taking the action. Examples of passive voice for political reasons could include “Bombs were dropped,” and “Shots were fired.” So, next time you watch the news pay attention and listen for examples of passive voice.
Also, businesses sometimes use passive voice. It sounds better to write, "Your electricity will be shut off," than to say "We, the electric company, will be shutting off your power."
Another place the passive voice is especially common is in crime reports. For example, a security guard might write "The store was robbed," because nobody knows who the robber was. Structure: Passive Voice

If you truly don’t know who is did the action, then you can’t name the person. So many times the passive voice does have advantages.
The passive voice is also sometimes useful in fiction writing. For example, if you were writing a mystery novel and you wanted to highlight missing cookies because they are central to the story, the passive voice is the often best option.
It would make more sense to write, "The cookies were stolen," instead of "Somebody stole the cookies."
The difference is subtle, but in the passive sentence “The cookies were stolen,” the focus is on the cookies. In “Somebody stole the cookies,” the focus would be on the unknown mystery person.. Structure: Passive Voice
