Importance of Prepositions in Spoken English
Objective: To understand position words such as in, on and into.
Definition: A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else.
The preposition means ‘that which is placed before’.
Words like in, into, at, outside etc., show the position of a thing in space or time. They always come before a naming word or a pronoun or an –ing word. In grammar these words are called prepositions because their position is always before a noun.
Eg. There is a cow in the field.
He is fond of coffee.
The cat jumped off the chair.
Prepositions may be arranged in the following classes:
1. Simple prepositions
2. Compound prepositions
3. Phrase prepositions.
Exercise
Fill in the blanks with suitable prepositions:
1. The dog ran _____the road.
2. I am tired _____walking.
3. I am fond ____ music.
4. He spoke ___me___french.
5. They live ___the same roof.

KINDS OF PREPOSITION : KINDS OF PREPOSITION Prepositions may be arranged in the following classes: 1. Simple prepositions 2. Compound prepositions 3. Phrase prepositions.

Simple and compound prepositions : Simple and compound prepositions Simple prepositions: At, by, for, from, in, of, off, on, out, through, till, to, up, with. Compound prepositions: Which are generally formed by prefixing a Preposition to a noun, an Adjective or an Adverb. About, above, across, along, amidst, among, amongst, around, before, behind, beneath, between, beyond, inside, outside, underneath, within, without.

Phrase Prepositions : Phrase Prepositions Groups of words used with the force of a single preposition. According to, agreeably to, along with, away from, in accordance with, in compliance with, in lieu of, in spite of, with reference to, with an eye to, with a view to.

Commonly used prepositions of space/place : Commonly used prepositions of space/place In: There were eight people in the cabin. Into: She went into the hall quickly. Under: I sitting beneath the tree Beside: who was sitting beside you? Off: He got off the bus at beach terminus. On: The book is on the table. At: There is a lady at the front office wanting to meet you.

Prepositions with other meanings : Prepositions with other meanings Of (regarding): I don’t know anything of this. By: This is a book by Gandhiji. Up to: Its up to you now. For: Here is a small gift for you. On behalf of: I would like to thank you personally and on behalf of the staff.
