Consider…. : Consider…. Assessment is not an isolated aspect of instruction Assessment is instruction
Dynamic Assessment (DA) : Dynamic Assessment (DA) General-snapshot-analysis of performance Ongoing intervention of development & performance Traditional perspective Dynamic perspective
Traditional Perspective... : Traditional Perspective... Summative assessment:
Occurs at the end of the instructional period
Captures results
Assesses past learning
E.g.:
Mastery tests, Achievement tests
Traditional Perspective... : Traditional Perspective... Formative assessment:
Occurs before the completion of a course
Its results feed back teaching
E.g.:
Planned tests, quizzes, anecdotal records Note: Their distinction lies in the reason for assessment not in the instrument or task employed
Dynamic Assessment : Dynamic Assessment To promote development considering individuals’ abilities.
To Transform those abilities through dialogic collaboration which means “transcendence”.
To offer a descriptive profile of learners rather than a measure (number, letter, grade)
What is the role of the teacher then? : What is the role of the teacher then? The “language expert” becomes a “mediator” to reveal the depth of those abilities the learner possesses.
Every mediator-interaction works as an instructional and evaluative function.
Learners take as much responsibility for tasks.
Theory of DA : Theory of DA Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory of Mind
Individuals are always mediated by cultural artifacts, social practices and activities
Internal abilities become internalized and reemerge as new cognitive functions (independent performance)
The individual no longer relies on the external environment and is able to self-mediate
